Do they have any aircraft on them, yet?

93 points behind Israel on 14:43 - May 23 by noggin | What is the political point being made? |
It is a combination of some people voting on liking a song (hence why better songs do tend to do better), different musical tastes (hence why certain styles of songs tend to do better) but also partisanship. The partisanship is affected by migrant populations. E.g. Greek Cypriots vote Greece highly, etc. It is also affected by political views. Britain as the dirty man of Europe who has persistently been aloof from the rest of Europe and has now "Brexited" counts negatively here. The worrying point being made, though, is that the political element would suggest that Israel's recent activity is generally popular with people in Europe. If it was seen as terrible, many more people would have chosen not to vote for them. Of course, it is a meaningless contest but the sentiment behind that is worrying. The point could be wrong if the Israeli song was so brilliant that the points they got are actually lower than they should have done. However, I suspect that isn't the case.

To us they seem so, but I think they're genuine to most of the countries involved. I like the batsh!t memorable ones.

93 points behind Israel on 14:42 - May 23 by The_Flashing_Smile | I agree we hadn't bothered with much staging, and he did look like a fat bloke doing karaoke, but it still deserved at least ONE frigging point! If you simply switched the nation from "UK" to any of the others it would've got a few points. We've been hated for so long we don't even bother making an effort anymore. |
Fat bloke doing karaoke is spot on, it was dreadful, the song didn't make the top 100 over here, if it had even a sniff of something it would have done easily.. We don't get it at all, all you need is someone incredibly good looking with a powerful voice for starters, that alone will get you mid-table..

Indeed. The second one on, forget the country but she was blonde and seemed to be wearing a very small chandelier, immediately got my interest!

To be fair, even I think there's a love to hate theme running through the competition. Even if it is rather superficial.

They don’t hate the UK. I consider myself fortunate to have worked with, and to be friends with people from all over Europe. Sometimes the subject of the UKs image abroad comes up and they don’t consider the UK to be hated by that many people in their home countries. In fact that find it amusing that a lot of people in this country think that this is the case.

Hmm, some people you've worked with have said to you (a British person) that they don't hate the British. Case closed.

Apart from the obvious and understandable, like football hooligans and drunken holiday makers, I think it's a myth that Europeans hate the British.

It fits into some people’s self-importance that the rest of Europe is out to get them.

I certainly don't. I do think it's a stereotype that gets played out a bit here and there, like all stereotypes. Sometimes for a bit of fun, occasionally more sinister. No different to some of the English wanting the Scots to lose in an international football match, is how I view the Eurovision thing.

And fishing waters, and Brexit, and various wars... In regards to music, I think they're jealous that we (and America) make all the best. It's telling that UK musicians AVOID Eurovision because they see it as being detrimental to their careers.

The song actually made number 43 in the UK charts. (Highest charting UK Eurovision entry since 2014) It would have probable done even better in the charts if it was sung by someone well known. It isn't my sort of song but it is the sort of pop song that does well these days. It may not have been the best song on the night and the performance was a bit meh but it was by no means the worst and definitely didn't deserve nul points. [Post edited 23 May 2021 16:30]

If there is any nation to be jealous of for their music it is Mali, for a country with a population of not much more than nineteen million and ranked one of the ten poorest in the World they do not half knock out top notch musicians (most of whom are based in Paris or Brussels at the moment as Mali is racked by infiltration by Islamic extremists and internal strife that also encompasses a months old coup d'etat.) This may explain why so few pick up on the the brilliance of their musicians (which owes a lot to the Griot tradition) but it is also down to the insularity of many media spheres globally and the craven nature of marketing types within music production. The United Kingdom and the United States have many fine musicians but by no means do they have a monopoly on talent, just a near monopoly on the broadcast of music and this is to the detriment of the enjoyment that is possible for all of us.
