Chester in Wales? Might as well include Hereford in that case...

Wasn't it Chester where there was a gig cancelled in lockdown? Allowed in England but the bogs were in Wales were it wasn't allowed at the time?

Kelty Hearts in play off to join Scottish League on 02:32 - May 24 with 2106 views | SuperCoops | I live about 5 minutes away from Kelty and have been up here for about 11 years now. Over the last 4 or 5 years they've done major works behind the scenes and the ground has been totally transformed in preparation. Big money behind the scenes for them to get where they are, a serious competitor for Cowdenbeath a few miles away. While Barry Ferguson has done a great job, it's also worth recognising previous manager Tam Courts who did an amazing job as both captain and then manager for Kelty. It's an impressive set up, whether they can make it last, who knows? But good luck to them. [Post edited 24 May 2021 2:33]

Thanks for posting that, sounds interesting and will be intriguing to see how they get in next season Will the people backing the club have the resources to take them much further?

To be honest, I don't know where the money is coming from but it seems fairly steady and the infrastructure and the community set up has massively grown in recent years. To be honest, to compete in the lower levels of SPFL aren't a lot different to where Kelty have been. Kelty have gone up number of divisions in recent years and were the first "Junior" (basically semi pro - not kids Leagues like it sounds) to breakaway from the Junior set up to join the pyramid set up that would lead into the SPFL. Quite a lot of Juniors have now taken that step to join the pyramid by joining the East of Scotland set up to try and emulate Kelty's journey, to the extent that I think the Juniors has dropped from 5-6 Leagues down to 2 or 3 Leagues. I don't think any of these teams are quite on a par with Kelty but some might challenge once all the new EoS teams find their level. There's a lot of poor teams in the lower levels of the pyramid but there are some very good teams too and Kelty have beaten them all and rose well. Can they compete in the lower divisions? Yes. I can see them over taking their closest neighbours, Cowdenbeath, in the not too distant future. But much depends if the finances stay in check (which I think they will) and I think they will pick up a few new fans along the way (perhaps at Cowden's expense). But if they need to expand their already newly redeveloped stadium at some point, that could be a challenge. [Post edited 24 May 2021 10:38]

sounds like they have approached building the team well, very much from the bottom up. I have a friend from Forfar, the wonderfully named 'Loons' so have an odd passing interest in Scottish lower league football which such exotic sounding place names like Abroath and Stenhousemuir How come you've landed up there? I always liked the names, even more so in the early rounds of the Scottish Cup, especially clubs like Civil Service Strollers, Burntisland Shipyard, Forres Mechanics etc. The familiarity of names like Arbroath, Stenhousemuir etc, especially when pronounced by James Alexander Gordon, was rather like listening to the shipping forecast. I defy most Englishmen to pin most of the Scottish clubs on a map with any degree of accuracy.

Kelty Hearts in play off to join Scottish League on 11:24 - May 23 by Radlett_blue | Bearing in mind that the Scottish League includes luminaries such as Annan Athletic (pop 8,780) I don't think that a "village team" will exactly feel over-awed. |
Gretna played in the SPL season 2007/8. Population 3,040. Went tits up though.
| We have no village green, or a shop.
It's very, very quiet.
I can walk to the pub. |

Gretna were very unique as they were heavily bankrolled by one man, Brooks Mileson. Much like Rushden & Diamonds were. Mileson spent massively at Gretna by their standards, totally unsustainable. When he became terminally ill, his family (on his behalf) withdrew financial support completely in February 2008 before he died later that year. As expected, they collapsed almost immediately. The team were relegated on the pitch anyway, but every member of staff and players were instantly made redundant. They were immediately demoted to the bottom division because of lack of guarantees for their future before the club resigned from the league completely during that pre-season. The current Gretna 08 team are a phoenix club of the original Gretna. Mileson was personally posthumously declared bankrupt owing £1.85m to a businessman and his bank account also being over half a million overdrawn. [Post edited 25 May 2021 9:55]

That would explain that then. Thanks. Got married in Gretna in 2009. Walked around the place the afternoon before and for the life of me couldn't understand how the "village" had managed to get into the SPL, as there was literally nothing much there.

Although Mileson's heart was in the right place, by all accounts, Gretna was a bit of a play thing with no contingencies in place for events like what did cause their downfall. It was a fairytale story for the town and they lapped up the romance of little old Gretna making the SPL, but it was totally unsustainable and should act as a cautionary tale to any club relying on one person.
