BBC 4 Dylan covers 19:36 - May 28 with 1092 viewsOldsmoker

It's on now.
Just watched Lulu destroying Mr. Tambourine Man.
The Byrds version was by far the best and it got a UK no. 1.
Lulu's version didn't, so why play it.

I think whoever put this together hates Dylan so has picked the worst covers.

Don't believe a word I say. I'm only kidding. Or am I?

I turned over to BBC4 just in time to see that, think I would rather sit through this last formal season again rather than hear that again.

Don’t expect TOTP 1991 to be much better musically either, not even feeling the nostalgia from being 14 got most of those.

I’m quite liking KT Tunstalll doing Tangled up in Blue, certainly better than what went before.

That was good.
Saw her at Glasto sometime last century.

I stand by my first assumption that whoever put this together is going for the obscure covers rather than the top ten.

Who's doing Blowin' in the wind? Johnny Mattis, Babara Dickson or Neil Young?

Ok it's Adele now so I'm OK for the next 3 mins.

I've given up.

Lulu was, as you say, the absolute pits.

I only put it on at 7:30, hate to think what I might have missed.

These things always suffer slightly from what is in the BBC archive but I’m sure there was better than Lulu and Hucknall.

BBC pop music producers have always loved camp & kitsch.
They must have wet themselves when Jive Bunny appeared.

Old Grey Whistle Test and Jools Holland Later... have a wealth of good stuff but hardly gets an airing unless it's an anniversary for something.

Buckley did these during the Grace sessions, seemingly when he got bored. I wish I was that good when bored

I agree that they are great Dylan covers but when it comes to the options you cannot ignore Odetta. Not sure if this counts as a cover though as apparently Odetta released the song a couple of months before Dylan:

A number of songs (although Mr Tambourine Man wasn't one of them) were from the legendary Basement Tapes, and sent round to record companies for possible recording by other artists before any release by Dylan. Two prime examples are Quinn The Eskimo (Dylan's only recorded performance is a live one from the Isle of Wight Festival in 1969 or 70), and Wheel's On Fire. The Julie Driscoll/Brian Auger version of the latter was released even before The Band's version on Music From Big Pink. A version with Dylan singing it didn't appear until the Basement Tapes was released in 1975.

Think the story's similar with this. I don't think Dylan recorded an official version until after a number of other artists had put out their take.

He didn't record this until Black Lace had rejected it
