Definitely part of the problem in our politics and political coverage, they’re now more of a public disservice that drags down standards, as well as dragging down the overall good the BBC does.

They're trying too hard for the tabloid market, rather than seeking to set a standard to which other outlets should aspire. That's what happens when tory governments starve it of funds.

Indeed. They need to be truly independent and their budget ring-fenced.

The bbc are starved of funds??? I’m forced to pay £160 a year and I hardly watch them. They get far too much unwarranted cash. [Post edited 1 Jun 2021 8:11]

Agreed. They used to be my go to tv and radio but they turned so preachy on topics that don’t properly represent their audience. [Post edited 1 Jun 2021 8:51]

So all the BBC's issues stem from the fact they are starved of funds? 26 million times £160 is £4,160,000,000. I do accept of course that you were joking - weren't you? Damn Tories

Thought for the day, on the today programme, and don’t get me start on Songs Of Praise, and errr possibly other things, but apparently you don’t have to legally watch and listen to all the BBC output, which is nice. [Post edited 1 Jun 2021 15:24]

The BBC isn't a single entity channel though is it. There are a few channels with dramas, documentaries, arts etc and then there's the radio services. And on top of that many will also use the website and its numerous resources. There's lots of support for kids and adults available if they care to look. Maybe it's just underused in that respect.

We can complain about our politicians and political debate all we want, but until the political journalists and commentators up their game and pursue honesty, transparency and objectivity rather than the same power, influence and money chased by the political class then we’re stuck with this poor excuse for a democracy.

I actually don't have an issue with the content so much as it's draconian funding model. Putting pensioners in jail to pay Gary Lineker millions, is not progressive. I think it should be a choice, and think it needs to move with the times.

I actually agree with this and, like other state broadcasters, it should just be rolled up into general income tax. I don't really see the need for it to be an entirely separate tax as it just creates more issues.

The danger with this is that it makes the BBC reliant on central government funding on a year-to-year basis. They're already cowed by the current government - can you imagine how bad it would be if they were reliant on them for their funding each year. The licence fee isn't perfect, but I think describing it as draconian is a bit over the top. The issue with pensioners was primarily created by the Cameron government withdrawing funding for the free licences. Much like their huge cuts to local government, they've managed to ensure someone else gets it in the neck for their decisions.

"Not if you don't watch it or lusten to it or stream it" Incorrect. But don't let facts ruin your assumptions... And I don't have any issue with the political leanings, which I think are very balanced. My issue is the regressive funding model.
