Serious post. Bullying on this site. 17:22 - Jun 3 with 13250 viewsOriginalMarkyP

I do think recently that a bit of a bullying culture has developed on here. It's a bit ugly to be honest.

Nothing wrong with joking and having a debate, but there are some on here who attack everything certain posters on here say, regardless of whether they agree with it or not. And that's a bit crap.

I'm not part of any #BeKind movement but maybe think for second about the person on the recieving end of your 'witty retort'. Some people have a pretty low threshold after a lot of time locked indoors with the pandemic, especially ones with pre-existing mental health issues. Maybe think about how you word it, it doesn't take more than an extra minute.

We all support the same team after all. COYB!

There's two, maybe three categories of people, who get the 'attack everything treatment'.

1. Trolls and Dreadful Behaviour apologists

2. The 'endless' posters. You know the sort - the ones who continually brainfart every thought they have and Tweet they read. I'm not saying it's deserved that you get a gob full for doing it, but by 'heck is it frustrating when a good thread falls off the page because of a stream of endless Twitter nonsense.

3. The occasional unlucky b*gger who gets off on the wrong foot and never recovers.

There's something you can do about the first two(category 1 - Phil eventually bans then, category 2 - stop posting as much sh1t), not so much the third.
[Post edited 3 Jun 2021 17:34]

As you say, there's a massive difference between 1 & 3 in particular.

Some people who say there's no bullying on here have no idea - simply because they've either never been targeted themselves, nor been around to see it when it did happen, & it then got deleted. Or they think you're simply referring to your category 1 here.

Re 3 - think that probably applied to me, as this I'd never been on the internet before, let alone any forum, before coming on here (2nd site of my internet experience after the official ITFC one), and I did make some pretty stupid mistakes early doors!

Unfortunately, early impressions sometime stick in the minds of a few, added to which there was a huge amount of sexist sh1t on here back in the late 90s & for a few years after (well done to all concerned for that now being reduced to vanishingly small).

But unless you'd actually seen it (and I know a few have as they sent supportive PMs - for which thanks) the unprovoked defamation, vitriole & abuse, including overt sexual harrassment, that I've received from a handful on here over the years, would shock most.

I also find it appalling that some people are prepared to call others "psychotic", "sociopath" and similar terms - not in a jokey way, but simply because they're not prepared to give way in a heated argument. Particularly shocking when some of those doing the labelling are also those who say they support those with mental health issues - talk about hypocritical.

Spot on Bazza. I think there's a few on here who want to say their bit and then get patted on the head. They aren't interested in actually discussing anything - they just want to be told they're right.

They won’t get far with that attitude 😂

Would you care explain what contentious posts I made.

I brought it to your attention that i was being cyber bullied by a group of posters

The response was bascially it's my fault for wanting to discuss players rumoured on social media to be linked.
I did not start rumours of players. Just posted what a few that was being discussed

Having looked back I started only 2 new threads on player link rumours.. the rest were replies to other peoples OP's.

The latest cyber attack on me was because I said I wouldnt believe a posters source. Not the poster but their source.

I've been off the site since my last post.. and counted 7 threads where people have brought my name into it.

And on the day of my last post. There were 8 posts about me before I'd even logged on.

So yes there is a bullying group on here. But no 1 moderating is interested.

I think Phil does a decent job here in keeping a balance. Discussions do get heated, it's the nature of them. We all share our love of the club but it doesn't mean we are all the same.

If you get into a debate, you can always just stop it. The forum doesn't want to become totally bland. There just has to be a balance.

Exactly this. No one with an ounce of sense wants a vanilla bland board. And this is why this is such a great site as the views on football, history, politics etc are interesting and do sometimes get heated.

Also, the role of the moderator isn’t to protect a posters sensibilities or to stop that person from getting ‘pilled on’ but to stop such argument from getting abusive, libellous and downright vile.

If, for example, I was to post something ‘edgy’ or ‘controversial’ without the evidence to backup such an argument then I wouldn’t class it as bullying if thirty posters replied with actual evidence telling me that my reasoning was flawed. That is not bullying and if people think it is then they shouldn’t be on the internet at all.

Liking the way this thread has caused a couple of pages of posts calling out a poster who clearly struggles with those sorts of reactions, despite said poster being incredibly inoffensive and easily ignored if you just think they post too much...

There are respected long-term posters who have ceased posting because of you.

You are so way off with this constant victim claiming.

Lots, and I mean lots, of nice, regular, decent people have asked you on many occasions to reconsider your style a bit, that's it. That's all.

You have shown them utter contempt and out-rightly ignored them.

That bit's on you, not everyone else.

If he bothers you that much just leave the chap alone and pop him on ignore.

My two cents on the situation.
I think posters view the forum very differently. I’ll use a university analogy. Some see the forum as being like the student bar. A place to discuss your opinions on things casually. Some see it like a formal debating society where you can’t just shoot the breeze, you have to fully reference everything to peer reviewed journals.
This difference of approaches causes friction. There are certainly some characters here who possibly get a bit overheated with that friction ... if someone is using the forum differently to you and you don’t like it just ignore them.

If I bother you that much you are free to do the same bud.

If you bothered to read what I said you'd see there have been a number of posters complaining.

Perhaps you'd like to pop them all a message individually with the same advice, or maybe it would be easier if just one person took it on board. What do you reckon?

Maybe all 20 of them are wrong.

For what it's worth-

disagreeing is not bullying
nuance is not bullying
multiple people having a similar point of view is not a clique
And Spats on this forum are ridiculously tame vs almost every forum I frequent (not to mention the usual implosions on fb groups)

We just have a board where a lot of people want to be the loudest, and when there is a reaction they feel bullied.

FWIW - if someone feels they're being bullied and fails to PM those they feel are to blame to attempt to sort it out, they're doing themselves a massive whoopsie. If you get abuse from someone in the pm reply, then boom - you're being bullied. Report it as abuse, supply the proof and the situation is addressed.

Publicly crying fowl is merely just an act of posturing and trying to prime yet another precious public pantomime in my opinion.
