Are we handing out pro deals 15:29 - Jun 16 with 1042 viewsBluefish

Because we think they can make the first team or because we need to fulfil U23 fixtures?

Your question makes it sound like we don't sign some of our scholars up every year.

Be a combination of both plus a reward for performances in recent season, potential to recieve a fee, potential to send out on loan and see how they develop etc.

Those who sign deals in their first year or at the end of it are ones to keep an eye on.

We used to care about academy kids breaking through and used to use the season to blood them, especially during dead rubber fixtures at the end of the season. We certainly didn't play out of contract no hopers and useless loanees in front of them.

Had the u23s and u18s not had playoff/cup games etc to play we would have seen some in the tail off first team games.

Also. There arent to many who could hold their own yet at 1st team level as we saw with Gibbs appearence.

Never be afraid to share your thoughts.

As others have said, they had the play-offs and cup run to contend with. I wondered if Cook held back from interrupting the work that Atay and Dyer were doing so as not to get off on the wrong foot. As well as that, Cook clearly wasn't happy with the culture of the squad he inherited. Maybe he didn't want to bring the young lads into that or knock their confidence too much by being in a losing side.

With the new lads signing up it does seem like a larger crop getting contracts so you can only hope that we get to see at least some of them in the first team. We're also playing a lot of friendlies so I get the impression he's at least got his eye on some of them. More realistically though it's that the club wants to avoid a Gibbs/Flores/Knight situation again.

I think Dyer was very informative about the difficulties the u23s faced, not least the procession of 1st team squad players dumped into the u23s because the squad was far too big. He and Butcher faced a situation of sometimes a shortage of players to train with, sometimes too many including some disinterested ones.

Reading between the lines it was all a bit of a shambles. Given the apology of a first team squad and that the yoofs made play offs etc, it seems Cook was available for advice but didn’t interfere.

One thing that interests me was Dyers concern about the quality of yoof players coming through, it’s interesting that a larger numbers are getting offered professional contracts.
