How does wasting 37 BILLION on track and trace 11:05 - Jun 20 with 4454 viewsBluefish

Get so easily overlooked or accepted?

Wasting 3.7 million on something that has failed than badly would be a disgrace.

37 million, 370 million, 3.7 billion, no it is apparently 37 BILLION

How can that much even get spent in such a short space of time??

It is the biggest scandal in the history of this country. No one uses it and when they did it didn't work.

37 BILLION!

Thanks for sharing that and highlighting my point.

The headline that the government has already spent 37B on the T&T is quite laughable. The OP now seems to agree that the numbers he purported are not being spent in the manner he claimed.

Plus on a side note, the fact that the OP doesn't seem to know that it's Test and Trace is even more amusing. That's why people should always fact-check before posting such things.

This post is indicative of people reading headlines and not looking at the details.

37 B has been budgeted for the program agreed, the majority of that is one the testing side and is due to be spread over a number of years.

The UK government DID NOT spend that amount of money building an app.

Please stop sensationalising and do a little research first. You hate the government and that's fine, but falsehood statements make you look ill informed. Unless you are appealing to people who also don't read or understand the details?

Whichever way you choose to look at it, it's a ludicrous amount of money to earmark for a project that has been woefully ineffective, poorly run and used as cash cow by Tory party donors.

What should not be over looked us why that figure was accepted. Could it be that it was set against -

"Why was a ‘luxe’ firm £9,000 in debt given a £26m PPE contract?"

"Two companies with no experience of PPE awarded £280m in government contracts."

Completely concur, it's an incredible amount of money spent and at this point, none of us really know the level of wastage contained in the spending so far. I do know that there were a lot of sites where flexed up all over the country to aid with the testing and for a long period of time they were running at capacity. So you can see how some of the money was spent. You can however argue whether this approach was, in hindsight, the correct one and whether that money should have been best spent elsewhere. However that is hindsight, and it is a wonderful thing to have. The government has made mistakes, as all governments have across the globe, rapid reactionary policies are often not always the best ones.

Impressively though, our government managed to dither over pretty much every single decision and STILL get nearly everything wrong.

The only thing they got right was the vaccine roll-out, presumably because they couldn't find one of their mates to run it quickly enough.

There are definitely questions that need to be answered at some point by this government. That's why we need an effective opposition to hold them to account. You can only use the 'we were in panic mode and needed to get things sorted quickly' argument to a certain point. Mistakes were made, but some of these decisions were definitely rushed and not fully thought out.

I have no idea who came up with the 37B budget, almost back of a fag packet approach. However, in these circumstances, it's probably better to overestimate rather than underestimate (oh and of course choose more wisely how to spend the money in the first place!)

This was being pointed out at the time - 'hindsight' has merely proven those earlier concerns

And to suggest that this catalogue of failures and highly questionable acts can be dismissed as 'rapid reactionary policies' is extremely misleading at the mist generous.

The government put the NHS into the position of PPE shortage by ignoring the recommendations of Exercise CYGNUS, by refusing to join an EU procurement programme, by shutting down far too late*, sending infected patients back into care homes, 'world' beating test and trace app that failed, and when trust in government advice was being openly questioned Johnson backed Cummings.

So no weasel worded excuses will distract from the failings that were in the main ideologically driven.

To paraphrase "'To make one mistake may be regarded as a misfortune; to make so many looks like incompetence.”

Even the false claims that are being made normally relate to TEST and trace, whereas your use of "Track and Trace" and saying that "no one uses it" indicates that you simply don't understand that much of the money is being spent on TESTING, which is absolutely vital.

In any event, read this fact checker and think again:

And, whatever your view on banks, that was one area where we showed leadership and set the tone for most other economies to follow. We just didn't relentlessly crow on about being world beating back then. It seems like a different world now.

Maybe you should consider the purpose of a Test, Track and Trace system. And asses it based on that.

The purpose was to slow down the spread of COVID-19. It failed to do that.

Internal govt assessment finds current self-isolation policy has "low to medium" effectiveness.

The UK Government suppressed access to sick pay for people self isolating.

So it will be money that was wasted, and the consequences of a failed test, track, trace system should weigh heavily on the Government.

It should, but it won’t.

The point being that it has somehow filled the righties simply brains with the lie that somehow Gordon Brown was the cause of that collapse, and so cost the country billions sorting it out.

Whereas the reality is that it was yet another righty reckless borrowing spree, that like both Anthony Barbers and Maudling' s 'dash for growth', and Lawsons boom was doomed to end in a bust.

All to reminiscent if the 1929 US stock exchange collapse - where people were borrowing money to buy shares on an ever rising stock market. It was unsustainable. Up to 2008 it was a case of lowering creditworthiness to lend against speculative house prices.

Banking regulation is there for a reason - and when it is either bypassed or stetched then there should be no surprise as to where it ends.

I agree with you that GB was not solely responsible for the collapse - indeed he was a good politician on the whole. However your so so left wing attitudes and views cloud many issues. i know of no one who solely blamed GB - I am not sure that you did either.
i tend to get my views from mixing with ordinary folk and can not remember hearing that.

37 billion is the 2 year figure but it makes me laugh how the same people who still harp on about Gordon Brown selling the gold (the loss in which was about £10bn in today’s money) are happy to defend Harding and co.

Didn’t Gordon brown apologise for failing with regulating the banks.. started FSA to regulate banks.. bankers ask him not to regulate to much.. Gordon doesn’t understand how to regulate them anyway, leaves them to it, they borrow loads of money and loan out money people can’t afford to pay back, while paying massive bonuses to themselves , goes tits up, government bails out banks.. with tax payers cash.. and banks still taking massive bonuses.. I’m sure it went something like that..

It didn't really go like that. It's certainly fashionable from the Tory side to simplistically make GB the scapegoat for the crisis and subsequent recession, but that's just electioneering with little basis in fact. The reality was far more complex, more do do with the globalisation of banks and risk flows through the system and our high vulnerability due to the strength of our banking sector, as I understand it (and I certainly don't understand much; I've no background in this at all). But yes the Govt did bail them out and did use taxpayers money. Some of this also generated net returns for the tax payer when the banks settled their loans or where re-privatised. Large bonuses at the time do seem unfair though, for sure.

GB did say in hindsight that he wish he'd done things differently, so that is a confession of sorts, but also an open and honest appraisal. It's also worth remembering that at the time the Tories were pushing for less regulation - they said it was holding us back and that the banks could regulated themselves through competition 'keeping them honest' (or words to that effect.

Correct - global contagion to the global banking system, largely from US Sub-prime debt.

However, the infamous treasury note from Liam Byrne was probably the greatest gift to the Conservatives imaginable!!
