Birders: Hoopoes 12:55 - Jun 24 with 1015 viewsSwailsey

Hi TWTD birders,

I have set myself a target to finally see a Hoopoe this year. I have wanted to see one for about 27 years now. I always seem to miss them/never find out until after they have flown and left Suffolk.

I used to check BINs regularly, and was a much more active birder a few years ago (when doing an internship at the RSPB) but life has sort of got in the way.

Does anyone have any other suggestions for sites to monitor? I'm a bit out of the game now.

Alternatively if anyone becomes aware of one being spotted, please feel free to contact me!!!

Thank you TWTB.

This site is excellent.

I saw one in Belstead 3yrs ago, wonderful.

I also saw a pair in Southern Spain in 2019.

Please note: prior to hitting the post button, I've double checked for anything that could be construed as "Anti Semitic" and to the best of my knowledge it isn't. Anything deemed to be of a Xenophobic nature is therefore purely accidental or down to your own misconstruing.

Rare Bird Alert
Suffolk Bins
At the moment there is something in Suffolk that is even more exciting than a Hoopoe. A Roller. Its at Lackford near BSE. Look at Suffolk Bins for directions. (Its near West Stow Anglo-Saxon Village.

I see Hoopoes all the time even during winter as a few stay over but I am in the Algarve 🤭 seriously they are lovely birds and I never tire of seeing them.

Good luck! Hoopoe are great. Could definitely recommend a trip to Extremadura to see them in really typical habitat once the pandemic allows.

I use Birdguides website btw to keep up with UK news/rarities (don't twitch tho!).

Fab thanks everyone. I'm gonna set a reminder to check all the sites every morning.

Imagine a world where I see a Hoopoe and find out WSCHMCFLLCH!

A superb bird
Here in the Asia they can be plentiful

For now I leave a some insightful reading from
The Conference of the Birds.

In the poem, the birds of the world gather to decide who is to be their sovereign, as they have none. The hoopoe, the wisest of them all, suggests that they should find the legendary Simorgh. The hoopoe leads the birds, each of whom represents a human fault which prevents human kind from attaining enlightenment....

Anyone who can't get to the public toilets in Church Road in time, I guess.

Swailsey - There are a couple of really good WhatsApp bird groups in Suffolk. Both free to join. You will get instant news for sightings but your phone will be pinging regularly. PM me for more details.
