Bit of a dilemma 08:07 - Jun 30 with 1801 viewsBluefish

I've just taken over a new team at work, they are a close knit bunch and someone coming in from a different team will take a while to be accepted. My first department meeting leading them will be Monday 12th July, I really want to book the day off and if I don't I will be hanging.

What is the best option?

Book the day off on my 1st day
Turn up hanging
Don't get slaughtered watching the football

Ignore option C, that is a ridiculous idea

So you are going to book off the first day you are meant to have a department meeting with you new team? A team that will 'take a while to accept' someone coming in from a different department?

Well that will go down well with them. What a boss.

Turn up hanging. Nice to see you run your professional life like you run your forum posts by the way.

Turn up hanging and hope they like football and are in the same boat. Instant bonding

EDIT: or give them all the day off too

You only make one first impression. Don’t book leave, don’t show up under the weather. Leadership asks a bit more of you.

Tell them you are expecting there to be a rush on burgers following the football the previous day and therefore it's probably best to postpone the meeting until the Tuesday. And make sure you get all your mates to buy burgers that day to preserve your credibility. Although maybe get them to buy a few each as two isn't going to qualify as a 'rush'.
You're welcome....

Turn up hanging, then tell them all they can all leave if they don’t want to do things your way

Pretend to seem interested in what they have to say, and say as little as possible yourself

Pretty much the opposite of what you do on here.

....tell them you are doing it so that they can all enjoy themselves watching the football and not have to worry about having a meeting with their new bellend of a boss.

Simple.

(although I'm not sure why you would be hanging after watching Spain v Denmark)

Turn up hanging and then act all busy/important before inviting them out for a lunchtime bonding session at the pub. Neck three or four in an hour and coast through the rest of the day.

Simple.

Call them out for what they are - i.e.not good enough. Tell them that they don't have a future in your team and you want to bring in new people that are up for the challenge and understand what the company really means. Your bosses will back you.

Turn up hanging.

Tell them they are not proper workers.

Give them all comedy nicknames.

Option C is going to happen - just accept it.

After you’ve accepted that, bring in some doughnuts or light morning snacks (vegan friendly to be safe), simply blag the meeting and pretend to show an interest in your team.

I'd try and move it.... no one else is gonna want to be there either if England make the final coz lets face it. If we win the thing the entire nation is going to go mental and not stop for a week.

If we lose then we're all going to sing songs and celebrate a good tournament and beating ze Germans at least.

There are no winners having the meeting on the 12th I'd explain that to all involved (with a bit more tact than its for the sesh) and then at the v least you look like a ledg in front of the new team for at least having tries to move the meeting which none of them want to go to anyway coz they will also be hanging

Poll: Will Phil ever confirm we are actually close on a signing ever again
