Absolutely loved yesterday but before we all start getting ahead of ourselves. Just a reminder that Ukraine finished top and unbeaten in their qualifying group ahead of Portugal. They drew with Portugal away and beat them at home.
Admittedly they have had a slight downturn in form since then, particularly in the nations league with losses to Germany and Switzerland yet a win against Spain. They have not got off to a great start in the world cup qualifiers with draws against France, Kazakhstan and Finland.
They are a dangerous opponent on their day and it would be so very England to lose against them having beaten Germany.

This is exactly the same comments as were being made by England fans before the Croatia game. Croatia had played two games with extra time and pens so will be tired. It was England who ran out of juice.
The biggest factor for England is the heat. Rome is likely to be over 30 degrees, Up to now it's been reasonably cool conditions.
Ukraine played their last game in Bucharest where it was humid. They have four days to recover which is enough. |

Trouble is England fans, press etc will write off the Ukraine and any potential SF opponent same as we did with Croatia in the World Cup and we know what happened in that game. Remember all the Croatian players after the game saying they didn't have a better motivation than the fact they had been completely written off by everyone in England and the whole of England were talking about who we would play in the final
People also only need to look at the Switzerland - France game, on paper no way should Switzerland win that game but they did |

That is another aspect. The game will be roughly 10pm to midnight Kiev time, but 8pm to 10pm (pretty much normal evening kick-off) London time. Will probably not make much difference, but every little helps. |  |

As other people have said, anyone in this stage is dangerous. However, there are "better" teams England could have played.
The qualifying group games are irrelevant really as most were years ago.
In the Euro 2020 groups they did well against the dutch when they actually started to attack at 2-0 down. I saw them vs Austria too and they were hopeless.
I only saw first bit and the end of normal time & ET yesterday and it looked a fairly even game with neither looking that great.
Lets be honest, ENgland should be beating them, but France should be beating the swiss, and one-off games anything can happen. |  | | |

Just for clarity on this post. I am well aware that there are harder opponents that we could have faced. The point is that we should not be underestimating them because of this and treating it as an easy ride to the next round. The fans and media did that with Croatia and Iceland in 2018 and 2016 and look how that turned out.
Interesting to see that the majority of TWTD posters have their heads screwed on with this but that doesn't seem to be the case in the wider world. I have spoken to a few people today IRL who seem convinced that we are basically in the final. | | | |

they don't have what we have though, they don't have Gareth Southgate.
I know fans want to see all out attacking players out there going nuts, but Southgate has us set up so well, watching that in the stadium yesterday I appreciated what a solid unit we are. I never felt phillips rice stone and slabhead would be beaten for anything, air or ground.
I think he will have said to them "enjoy this for a moment, but we've won nothing yet" that squad will be so determined to go one further then they did at the WC.
