Rotherham were not going to sell him to us if they could help it, hence Warne talking about it at every press conference going. Yes, you can argue we didn’t offer enough or maybe we just didn’t offer too much.

There seem to be some myths surrounding player transfers that one club comes in for a player and it's all hush hush and no other clubs are aware.
Every player these days has an agent. Agents make big money and the second we were in for someone like Crooks and he was open for a potential move, you can guarantee the agent is letting other clubs know, in this case Championship ones who have either expressed an interest in the player who haven't.
A move to the division above gives the player better opportunities and likely better pay and more money for the agent.
Even if we'd gone straight in with a bit Rotherham would accept, they'd likely make it public anyway to encourage any interest Championship clubs to offer the same so they aren't selling to a rival.
The player himself even if desperate to accept will have an agent telling them to hold fire a bit to see if they can get them something either better.
Unfortunately, unless we are the very best club coming in for players (which we won't be when we are after players who are likely good enough for the division above) we are never in a position of strength and have very little bargaining power other than to put an offer on the table and threaten to withdraw it if it's not signed by a certain date. That's also not a great way to say to a player we really want you.
Only so much we can do when in for Crooks or Celina or anyone else that, if they are interest to us, will be of interest to clubs the division above.
We know this. The player does. The agent does. We want the player as cheaply as possible, the player will always want to keep their options open for to a degree and we all know what the agents motivation is! [Post edited 7 Jul 2021 15:51]

I’d be shocked if we managed to pull this one off now, Crooks wants to play in the Championship and Rotherham don’t want to sell to a league rival. Very disappointing, would have been an excellent signing if we managed it. | | | |

Can't believe a championship club won't pay 1m for him.
Reckon this is Rotherham getting us all interested, publicly airing the bids, driving price and not wanting to sell to L1 rival.
