But yes, it's disappointing the few who are lapping it up and joining in with their own 'facts' on that thread including claims of English men and domestic violence.
It is a sad state of things when women (and men) are assaulted in their own homes*, and undoubtedly increase with alcohol consumption but what a thing to post as an excuse for Anglophobia. A few of them, including the Aussies might want to look a bit closer to home and sort their own domestic behaviour problems out.

Where it crosses the line into cheap personal digs, agree it's bang out of order. I can't blame people for having general anti-English feeling though. Much as it'd be nice if everyone could get along, we don't have the best record as travelling fans (even though it's only a small minority) and there's certainly a lot of English entitlement around.

I get the ABE sentiment to a certain extent, as there is still a lot of silly entitlement around. Part of the problem is the fact that our national broadcasters are British, not English, so Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish viewers have to sit through the hyperbole etc, which must get pretty wearing. All national broadcasters are ridiculously biased, but Brazilian broadcasters are mainly for Brazilians, Italian for Italians etc, so it doesn’t matter so much.
Having said that, some of the bile directed this time around towards a team made up of decent lads with a very good bloke as a manager, over nothing more than a bit of a soft penalty (when we’d already had a stonewaller ruled out) and one idiot with a laser pen (for a penalty that was saved anyway) is deeply unpleasant and basic xenophobia.
That’s the problem with hating other countries - it just fills you with poisonous bile and eats you up in the end. | | | |

I think you've hit the nail on the head there. We in the provinces get English centred stuff rammed down our throats all the time by broadcasters and the rest of the media. I totally understand why, but it does get a bit wearing. Take all the stuff this week about the lifting of Covid restrictions in England, 95% of the news this week as a result has been utterly irrelevant to us here in Wales (& Scotland/NI) even though they are supposed to be providing a service to the UK as a whole. It's easy to feel you don't matter.
Mind you, I have seen quite a few Scots and Welsh people pick up on that angle that we have a team of decent lads, and people who normally wouldn't are supporting us. There was an article in the local press the other day encouraging people to support England (bet that's gone down well lol). | |
