Things not going as planned for Boris 21:36 - Jul 10 with 7018 viewsStokieBlue

It seems that 50% want "freedom day" pushed back, hospitals and transport want masks to be compulsory and a number of restaurant and pub chains are planning on keeping the mask requirement and social distancing in their establishments.

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2021/jul/10/public-alarm-grows-at-boris-johnso

Can only see all of the above increasing over the next 9 days.

Follow the science and data, not the popularism.

will that 50% still be following the current lockdown rules tonight though? will they be keeping to the rule of 6 or two households inside? inside or out will they be maintaining 2m distance from everyone not in their own household (unless they're wearing a face covering)? responding to an opinion poll is the easy bit.

Not sure you can shift the context to a single exceptional data point (a first cup final in 50 years) and disregard all the future data points where they have said they will do it.

The point is more that a lot of people don't want the changes even though Boris and Javid insist it's the will of the populace. Javid consistently lies about the modelling (quoting 100,000 cases by the end of August in every interview which is totally different to what the models are showing and what the scientists say) and some companies are taking it upon themselves to continue with the rules regardless what the government says.

I wonder if more establishments will take it on themselves to continue with restrictions and whether than will cause issues with those who feel they should be allowed in regardless because the government said X whilst the business says Y.

Businesses will be free to choose their own rules. If some wish to keep masks and distancing they can, they will attract customers that wish to keep masks and distancing, great. Some will wish to revert to a more ‘normal’ experience, they will attract customers that want this.

USA doing pretty well as is Israel. High levels of vaccinations.

Scientists say don’t open up in winter. So next Spring it would be.

How are the US and Israel relevant to our discussion?

Neither has the Delta variant in the numbers we have or the current level of growth that we have. Look at the data not false equivalences to totally different countries with different habits, demographics and geography.

The modeller on Marr just said we are possibly looking at 2000 hospitalisations a day at the peak of this wave. No chance the NHS can cope with that. Let's hope that modelling is wrong.

there's absolutely nothing special at all about tonight in terms of the virus. but it clearly is a factor which people are including in their own assessment of what to do. a large number of people have already moved from a simple rule based approach to a risk based approach - including i suspect a lot of those in the 50% in your survey. i suspect that a lot of the time when people respond to surveys they are answering in terms of what they want to see other people do.

And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show

Basically the same as it's always been. 50% are cautious and want to protect the NHS and the public, and 50% want to 'get on with it'.

No matter what happens and what decisions are made, people will be upset.

Until it kills us. People aren’t living with it. That’s the problem. They are determined to live in denial of it and almost go out of their way to expose others to it because they’re selfish.

Why is it "time to get back to normal"?

What is "normal" anyway? If you go back 50 years their normal was different to our normal. Normal in Asia has been wearing masks since SARS, they moved their normal because it helped them.

Why not delay whilst more people get vaccinated and then return to "normal"? Surely if we can limit the damage we should limit the damage?

I simply don't understand the rush to not do things that will help other people.

'Learning to live with it' would involve, sensible, mitigating measures. Such as continuing the mask mandate. or School bubbles. Or support for employers in providing sick pay for isolating workers.

Restrictions are extremely minimal at present, anyway. There is no sensible rationale for discontinuing these extremely minor inconveniences other than it upsets the sort of people who say things like 'people ere too easy to get offended these days' to keep them.

But what they will do, is nt have the backing of the law to enforce their policies.

Plus, if you, as an adult cannot handle having to queue slightly longer of put a bit of cloth on your face for a few minutes, then you probably shouldn't be allowed out without a carer.

It's ripping through schools again. Classes of single digits, kids being picked up and taken out most lessons, kids being sent in by parents when they've been popped to isolate.

Colleagues are off too and one's panicking as their kid showed symptoms today, another said their kid has had two mates in hospital this week all of whom are under 8 years old.

Yet this prick is announcing pretend bank holidays and draping himself in our flag like the spoilt child he is, playing war with our country and its people because the spineless, far right cabinet he needed to seize power are letting him.

Looking forward to the follow-up on this thread with the scenes from Trafalgar Square tonight…

Covid isn't going away is it. We all know that so what do we do. We can't live like this forever. If ever there was a situation where we are "damned if we do and damned if we don't" this is it.

But that isn’t the case is it? Annoyingly we weren’t in a bad position thanks to the vaccination programme but now we are trying to run before we can walk. Give everyone the second jab who wants it, let immunity settle in (is it two weeks after the second jab?), review the data as it stands and THEN look at easing restrictions further, whilst maybe keeping in place mask wearing and ensuring sick pay is at a strong enough level.

Why open up completely when hospitalisations are increasing at the level they are? Because there are rent-a-gobs like Dan Wooton and Richard Littlejohm demanding it whilst the government has had enough of the level of funding.

For all his faults, it feels like the biggest issue has been Hancock getting caught - he was at least a voice of caution amongst the big four. Javid is as dangerous as Sunak when it comes to dismissing the continuing risk Covid carries.

If this goes tits up is that the end of Boris. Surely he wouldn't survive having to put further restrictions in place.

Yeah I’m in agreement. It’s not ideal but I see no sense in preserving life if the life that’s being preserved leads to a miserable existence. Words that have governed us for the last 18 months are completely contradictory to evolution: quarantine, isolation, lockdown.
