Just thinking back to how dangerous it was at the steps to Wembley. It's so fortunate there was not a profoundly horrific occurance given the bottle neck.

I've renewed my membership and plan to do a bit of Qatar, but I think that may be my last hurrah too.

The cost of following England is ridiculous, followed England for about eight years, but gave up about 5 years ago, got a ticket for the final, and now realise it wasnt just the cost, its the fooking idiots that attached themselves to it too.

This is probably the best place to post an account from someone who claims to have organised some of the jibbing:

The fact of the matter is that we should have never rebuilt Wembley, the National stadium should have been built on the outskirts of Birmingham around the NEC.

Absolutely. The current Wembley bears no relation to the old stadium whatsoever other than the dreadful access to it. It could and should have been built elsewhere. Birmingham, Milton Keynes wherever. Somewhere central. Wembley cost ludicrous amounts to build and quite frankly isn’t special. The buildings around it have walled it in making it even worse.

It’s simple, UEFA, FIFA and every sporting authority in the world should tell the U.K. Government and their relevant sporting bodies that no major sporting event will be held here for say 20 years minimum to give this country time to sort itself out. Ban to be applied to England only for the safety of folk in other countries. Id slap a 10 year ban on the England football team playing at all too. That solves the problem of keeping the rest of the world safe from our animals.

A shame for the younger England players, but the bigger picture is more important.

These two comments are very sad but also totally understandable to hear. I do hope you both ensure the FA know your feelings.

Wembley Park station has not changed for decades, it needs a major rebuild so it can act as the point where people get stopped, along with another one at the Wembley stadium station, and then close off all other access points

I think you're wrong. Before Euro 1996, a large staircase was constructed leading down from the 1948 extension and under the newly built Bobby Moore Bridge, which had opened in 1993. This was intended as a temporary structure and remained in its unfinished state until 2004, when extensive work began on the station in conjunction with the reconstruction of Wembley Stadium. Additional facilities were provided to handle event crowds, and the staircase was completed in time for the opening of the new stadium in 2007.
Yes, it's still inadequate. But almost any stadium holding 80,000 people can't have enough access points to allow all those people to disperse at the same time.

A footnote here which looks to be relevant given where they were from:

Assault on a police officer who was giving first aid to someone else. One of them had a final shirt on in the very clear CCTV image released earlier.

From your link, as you say:

"The officer was giving emergency first aid to a member of the public who had fallen down the stairs at Camden Town station on Sunday (11 July), when he was approached by two men who struck him round the head.

He suffered fractures to his face and serious injuries to his shoulder and upper body."

Can't even begin to get your head around that one can you?

It's hard to believe how people were trying to say this was a load of over-played noise over a small minority. As things have unfolded over the past two days there's been more and more evidence of how widespread the trouble was on Sunday, with many first hand accounts on here from posters who we would hardly refer to as soft.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/uk-57829412

Detailed analysis from a Bbc journo.

Am still unclear on the scale of the breach. But over capacity stands where there was only 75% capacity suggests it was in the 000s not the 100s.

The analysis also doesn't cover those doubling up through the turnstiles.

One question, is what crimes were committed? Clearly lots of public disorder on view which hopefully can be addressed retrospectively by the police using the many pictures to ID those responsible.

But for someone who simply went through open gates and/or followed a mate through a turnstile...is that a criminal rather than a civil offense? (I'd hope so but am not clear) The police are often unable/unwilling to get involved in civil cases so it may be that for many nothing can be done even of they are identified?

I have written before about the large numbers tailgating in at entrance H, and friends have reported similarly elsewhere. Our block was absolutely full, every row, every seat plus the stairwell was also packed. For the SF, this block was only about 75% full, as you would expect. This will not only have been the case in one block of course. There were many thousands in without tickets.

Plenty of evidence seems to be pointing that way. Am struggling to understand why such a major failure in security at a major sporting event isn't headline news and the focus of a major inquiry into those failings.

If a terrorist got into the stadium the consequences dont bare thinking about.

Did anyone see any trouble after the game around the stadium? I keep reading about it, but all the accompanying videos are events prior to the game or in the city. I was standing close to the Italian fans but left right after the penalty. Given the state of Wembley Way I headed to Wembley Central underground instead. I didn't see any trouble but I presume most Italian fans didn't come out for another hour.

Wembley Way was intense. I took my kids and it was quite an eye opener for them!

I got out pretty quickly and went straight down Wembley way to Wembley park. It was stopped twice briefly for the flow to ease.

During the first stop I saw a policeman with some backup and a group of lads exchange swear words but nothing happened. I think it was just drunk nonsense from the lads. I then saw people running up the stairs adjacent to Wembley way to get round the stoppage. One or two policeman were trying to hold half a dozen young lads back and they were working together to help each other get round him. Police sensed hundreds of people were watching, they were basically unsupported and backed off.

At the second brief stop just before the tube, people who had circumvented Wembley way were filtering into the station to everyone's annoyance. Police started trying to hold them back but we're mostly overwhelmed and again just sort of tried to limit the damage. Then someone in the actual, stationary queue seemed to faint behind me and people were shouting medic which was becoming frantic. The security people forming the barricade had no idea what to do and just let everyone go up the stairs to Wembley park.

After that went back to Liverpool Street and the central line closed bang on midnight. So had to find another way back to car.

In summary, the day was a total, lawless shambles. A miracle someone wasn't seriously hurt.

I know that was then, but it could be again..
