Lake Mead is at it's lowest ever level, it's now at the point where the electricity generated by the Hoover Dam is down 25% and water restrictions are going to have to be applied to the surrounding states.

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2021/jul/13/hoover-dam-lake-mead-severe-drou

The wildfires are expected to be worse than last years which were record-breaking:

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2021/jul/12/wildfires-california-oregon-drou

It's looking really bad for that area going forward with the way the climate change is effecting the region.

It's what they've been warning about for decades.

Meanwhile people who had a vested interest in the status quo have made lots of lovely money whilst convincing people that those dastardly thousandaire scientists were just scaremongering.

Hell our current PM was one of those people saying that it was all overblown via the media, in 2015.

“It is fantastic news that the world has agreed to cut pollution and help people save money, but I am sure that those global leaders were driven by a primitive fear that the present ambient warm weather is somehow caused by humanity; and that fear — as far as I understand the science — is equally without foundation. There may be all kinds of reasons why I was sweating at ping-pong [in December] — but they don’t include global warming.”

Now it's my understanding that the science has not fundamentally changed in 6 years. Still at least he eventually got it right, getting a bit late in the day now though.

I think we are screwed...

It's going to be too late, i dread to think what my children will grow up in, it's quite frightening really.

What hope do you have when for example a woman who lives behind me drives to and from school it's a 10 minute walk and she comes home everyday, does that morning and afternoon pick ups. It's not her fault but she also doesn't help in any way shape or form.

The most important thing for many when restrictions are lifted in a weeks time is to book a flight somewhere for a holiday, probably more than one flight for many over the next month or two.

The mindset simply isn't there to counter things, I am guilty of this as well in many ways.

Change is hard, possibly too hard for us as a society, hence the need for technological fixes no matter how much it annoys some people.

I remember being in Canada about 15 years ago. A group of Americans were at a nearby table. One of the women said she didn't know what to make of environmental concerns and climate change because the bible had nothing to say on the matter.

And Yanks wonder why people think them to be stupid.

We shall be taking 3 months off for our trip to Greece and using a mix of horse and cart and electric trains to get us to Greece and back staying for free with self organising, mutually supportive communities of syndicalists along the way and it will still work out cheaper than 2 weeks in Cornwall.
Changing Capitalism (requiring perpetual growth on a finite planet) is hard, maybe too hard for a disconnected society used to relying on technology to service its every need but change we must.

Your proposed solutions won't work, especially as the rest of the world move towards a higher standard of living.

It's not all about capitalism, people still went on holidays and flew all over the old Soviet Union, pollution from socialist states has historically been pretty awful (USSR, China for instance).

It's the constant oversimplification which is annoying. It's got nothing to do with technology, I've got no idea why you seem to hate technology so much.

Anyway, I don't think you need to side-track yet another thread with this.

Can you define 'higher standard of living?
Why on earth would you imply that Communism is the only possible alternative to Capitalism?
When did I ever say I hate (all) technology?....Heck my dream holiday even used electric trains. All I am proposing is some sense of balance.
Climate change will not be reversed while the current economic model remains intact.

(anyway, just wanted you to know I had read your thinly veiled critique of my stance...made me smile after work as I supped my tea.)

It wasn't thinly veiled, it was open and frank.

You're not proposing balance, anytime I reference technology you're right there complaining, it's not balanced in the slightest.

"Climate change will not be reversed while the current economic model remains intact."

Which is what I implied when I said change is probably too difficult for our society, things are not going to change in the way you want in the speed that is required no matter how many times you repeat it. It's utterly naïve to believe this could be the case.

Why don't you actually put forward a model of what you think would work within realistic timescales, how it would happen, how you would apply it globally and how it will affect peoples lives rather than constantly moaning about what other people post?

The last two climate change threads you've essentially done the same thing without actually offering any solutions or even elaborating much on your comments.

It's easy to blame individuals and to ask "What are you doing in your own lives to help?" But it needs more than this.
Governments must set rules and apply sanctions, but they won't do it.
Everybody doing their own little bit won't work, especially when there's those who won't.

Sigh. I don't know why I bother. You've not answered any of the questions I put to you.

Instead you've highlighted a small post-militant group from a small portion of Mexico who idolise Zapata and Guevara and have murals of them in their villages. They may well have a point with regards to some of their ideas but to claim this is scalable to the entire world population in the timescales required like I requested is ridiculous.

Citing "vested interested" every single time doesn't change the reality of the situation.

Seriously, if you're not going to answer questions realistically and reasonably then what is the point in answering them at all?

It's what they've been warning about for decades.

Meanwhile people who had a vested interest in the status quo have made lots of lovely money whilst convincing people that those dastardly thousandaire scientists were just scaremongering.

Hell our current PM was one of those people saying that it was all overblown via the media, in 2015.

Article by the Guardian at the end of June.

https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2021/jun/30/climate-crimes-oil-and-gas-e

Just like the Tobacco industry researched if smoking caused cancer to see what their liabilty might be, the oil industry researched to see if they were causing climate change.
The research showed that they knew at least 30 years ago but decided to hide the research and fund a disinformation campaign to deny the link of fossil fuels to climate change.

If Johnson wrote that then maybe some of that funding found its way into his pocket.

Central Asia has experienced some record-breaking heat recently which mirrors the point regarding water reserves.

https://www.rferl.org/a/central-asian-drought-water-shortages/31324012.html

The drought is certainly going to make the wildfire season very challenging and there seems little respite from these temperatures.

The minimum temperature in Death Valley was 42C setting a new record.

All seems fairly common sensical, was going to reference the Ellen Mac Arthur foundation too but the article already does. Interesting it is a woman proposing this again, as I pointed out previously that our current mess is very much down to a typically 'male' mindset.

“The mindset simply isn't there to counter things, I am guilty of this as well in many ways.”

We all are. But accepting that will be massive.

Then we can move on the discussion from laughably irrelevant moves like “eating local beef” to sharing the bigger sacrifices that need to be made.

Hell, I think dealing with the pandemic involved far more sacrifice than what we’re talking about. And less money from governments/economic shrinkage to deliver solutions.
