Possibly, would need to re-work the lyrics as the original version is a loser's lament about being badly treated by life. Would be better if it was more of a rallying call about how we can triumph over adversity.
Depends how you look at it. I see the "try to get back up" bit as a bit "I get knocked down but I get up again" tubthumping about it.
Yeah it's an underdog's song, which ITFC have been historically. You could even see it as self deprecating humour... and when you're winning it becomes a song about overcoming the odds - when you do get back up you're singing the story of the blues (the blues don't give up).
Trust the process. Trust Phil.

This is where the the lyrics quite do not work for me, it is Chumbawumba without the getting up again/success. It is like a boxer who keeps getting hit, and is just hanging in there, because there is nothing better to do.
I remember the original and I could see this becoming an anthem, there is a catchiness to it.
If only we had a talented songwriter, who could re-work the lyrics to include how by sticking together we can and will triumph over adversity...
Lyrics
Here in my pocket I got the Story of the Blues Try to believe me 'Cos it could be front page news
I say I live with it like it hasn't happened yet I keep thinking of everyone How I'm the one, the one they're trying to get To tell the Story of the Blues
First, they take your pride Turn it all inside And then you realise You've got nothing left to lose
So, you try to stop Try to get back up And then, you realise You're telling the Story of the Blues
Feeling browbeaten Day after day I think it's over But I just can't get away
You say forget it We'll don't jump the gun You're laughing this time Next time you might be the one To tell the Story of the Blues
First, they take your pride Turn it all inside And then you realise You've got nothing left to lose
So, you try to stop Try to get back up And then, you realise You're telling the Story of the Blues
(repeat)
What they gonna say 'bout me When they tell the Story of the Blues

As I said, depends how you look at it. If you "get back up" despite the knocks, that's success. If you're winning as well, you don't need the lyrics spelling it out. It's there in front of you.
West Ham don't worry about their bubbles, like their dreams, fading and dying. That's much more defeatist for me!
As an aside, Ed Sheeran could make a fortune covering Story Of The Blues.
Trust the process. Trust Phil.

That's kind of what I see with it, it's nearly optimistic but the some of the last lines of "So you try to stop, try to get back up and then you realise you're telling the story of the blues" always struck me as - you got knocked down, then you thought you might be alright, and then you realised you're not. I can see how it can be taken the other way but I've always felt a sadness when listening to it, I spose that's why I'd see it as a good winning song because then you're turning the meaning (for me at least) on it's head.
All waffle of course but it's interesting that the same song can feel very different to different people!
"Never argue with an idiot. They will drag you down to their level and beat you with experience."

I’m with you, you love it and you’ll keep coming back whatever the knocks and you carry it around in your pocket, it’s always with you etc etc

Or a cover of Elton John's "I guess that's why they call US the blues"...

Take your point as there is a melancholy side to it no doubt, I find the uplifting aspect is that you’ll keep going, you’ll take all the knocks because that’s what you almost expect out of it, but just maybe things will go better than you think. I dunno maybe it’s more of a potential terrace song than an official tune for the club.

I think we're over analysing the meaning of the lyrics somewhat. It's a catchy tune and it's The Story Of The Blues.
