All the money in the world 14:25 - Jul 23 with 5083 viewscressi

Growing up as a Ipswich fan I would never ever play for that lot down the road if I had being good enough
Whatever offer anywhere But them my heart and head just couldn't get around it
To be a judas to all I know and have a pint with.

I’ve read it, he still played for them. Only didn’t sign because of the travelling. Nothing to do with rivalry.

Yes, and didn’t sign because of the travelling. Nothing to do with rivalry, which was the whole point of the OP.

Agree.. club should have done more reading between the lines but this shows how little loyalty is actually in football when money is involved! As the opening post for no money would I play or represent that football club but I’m a fan so it’s easy to say. You’ll just have to take my word for it that I mean what I say. Hope the lad flops there I really do.
Edit and that’s nothing personal it’s against the club he’s chosen!

Players get a rough ride by fans for being ‘disloyal’ and demanding a transfer etc etc. But as fans, how much loyalty do we show a player if we think he isn’t good enough? Not much.

I don’t blame him for going, but nor will I have any sympathy if it falls apart for him at Norwich. The same goes for all the other younger players who left for Arsenal, Man City and Chelsea etc.

I don’t really get your point, if I’m honest. The OP is saying he/she would never put on a Norwich shirt and never play for them. Yes, Macauley Bonne didn’t sign for Norwich, but he has played for them and represented them and only didn’t sign because of the travelling.

It’s not a big issue, just wouldn’t personally use him as an example of being the 1%.

This poster is on melt down alert. Looking for anything that’s there. From what I gather we will receive a significant fee for Gibbs.. (500k-800k) he’s a few years even if all went well from our first team so given our current predicament (League 1) this money hopefully can be used towards our next signing.

Edit. That said future talent and hopefully Cat1 status will prevent this in the future. Seen nothing that would suggest so far that our new owners would want this to continue. There is really little point to the academy if this trait continues.

I think you're right to a point about fans loyalty. We've been terrible for several years at this point, that's going to make fans less tolerant. That being said, a lot of faith has been shown in the homegrown boys, but they have also rightly copped criticism for their failings. It's a fine line but at some point they stop being young lads and become experienced pros who need to deliver.

"Never argue with an idiot. They will drag you down to their level and beat you with experience."

On a meltdown? What on earth are you going on about?

As somebody that knows Macauley personally, I’m just pointing out that I personally wouldn’t use him in the 1% as the only reason he didn’t sign was because of the travelling. Not sure why you’re making it into such a big deal.

FWIW, I actually agree with you and whilst it’s a bit of a shame we’ve lost Gibbs, I won’t lose sleep over it. The club offered him contract(s) which he didn’t sign for whatever reason, we don’t know. Hopefully the compensation money will be used to better our academy, or even provide more funds for the first team.

Aye, exactly the same from me to be honest. I'll never see the kind of money that's being offered to these lads so it's easy for me to say it, but at a certain point, the money is just a number. It's a short career but I think there's a balance between looking to secure your retirement and greed. Not necessarily accusing Gibbs of that, but hard to speak too favourably about someone who has gone to the dark side. The agents are the real villains of this, I doubt that Gibbs is driven by anything other than a desire to succeed, but most of these agents are just greedy and self-serving.

Think all fans, regardless of club are guilty of being rather one sided in terms of loyalty

Not sure that's true, we're all still here aren't we? We didn't jump ship for shinier horizons when our club reached it's lowest ebb. I've lived in Scouseland for many years and I've never considered swapping to a side I could see week in week out in the prem. We've showed a lot of loyalty to some suspect players over the last few years, I think we're allowed to be critical of one of our kids moving to the scum, regardless of the circumstances and motivations for him.

I agree with this. He’s a rival now. One we probably/hopefully will never see wear that disgusting kit they dawn. If he does and when we play them it will be more the sweeter when we win.

He would have been stupid not to sign for them.
1. He will get paid a lot more.
2. For reasons which may be valid, we'll see next season, it didn't look like he was going to get a game here.
3. If he is as good as they think, he will probably get sent out on loan to a club in our division, and play.

Supporting a club and playing for a club are two very different things.

But he is on loan !! the true test would come if he rips it up this season and Norwich offer him big bucks next !

It's definitely different, and when you consider that it's just a job for the players, then I see where tou're coming from. Easy to say I wouldn't make that move when there's no danger of it!

That's clearly not thinking straight. If I could ask them for all the money in the world I'd take it and use it to get town promoted ahead of them...

Poll: We recruit two strikers, one has to be Bonne or Wickham, who would you have?

Whatever the difference in wages is supposed to be, I very much doubt that is the major factor.

A Cat 1 academy offers far higher quality coaching. Look what the extra lottery money has done to the GB Olympic squad. Look at the number of layers who have progressed through their systems. Then look at the consistent number of youngsters who break into our first team as the next big think that fail to deveop any durther.

I suspect that to save money the club has had to use them to make up the numbers. Bishop and Downes have not exactly had clubs beating a pat to our door. When was the last time we produced a first team keeper - 2005 ?

Football has moved on, we have not, as a club and fans in some cases.

We prided ourselves on supposedly having one of the strongest squads in L1 last season. Something that has been cruelly exposed as being utterly false. Evans drained the life out of the club in every area. To move forward we need to recognise that, as this player loss is one of the consequences.

I don't expect Evans apologists to be made to parade in a hair shirt, but maybe an understanding of where we really are, and why this player left.
