Difference between GB and UK? 11:23 - Jul 27 with 5407 viewsKeno

My daughters Italian boyfriend has just asked me what the difference between Great Britain and the United Kingdom is (eg, why at the Olympics is GB, not UK)

Serious and comedic answers welcome

Plenty of celebration over here about that, though some would say there is unfinished business and some would say not.

The Great bit is unfortunate as it is as per Greater Manchester, or Greater London but is used by some as an example of a perceived arrogance of Britain.

Not sure if Britain was all of what is now England and Wales when it joined with Scotland to become Great (Greater Britain).

The British Isles are just not ever said here, even if they are technical correct to say them in weather forecasts across the Islands, it would never be said.

Though I heard an English person refer to Britain as the 'mainland' when here the other day which went down like a lead balloon.

Also we have all Island teams representing Ireland. For example the Hockey team. If you are Northern Irish you can choose which you play for and the Irish team will permit a UK citizen and National represent Ireland, Same with Rugby and a few more but not Football. They tried it in the 70s and the resistance was from the NI association.

Rory Mac could choose and he comes from a very strong Unionist Community and originally declared for Britain. After gentle persuasion as only the Irish can do, he seemed to change, then say he didn't want to come out for either team etc etc. The Union Jack he used to have on his bags has disappeared. I would say he strongly identifies as British but wants to stay out of it all.

No, James I wanted to make it clear he wasn't the ruler of Britain (Roman Britain) and therefore declared the territory of England, Scotland and Wales to be Great Britain, in order to distinguish it from Britain.

Things have changed since then, it's not an offical title but is nowadays commonly synonymous with the UK - the people of Northern Ireland call themselves British (if Protestant)

That's contentious at best... The decedents of the colonisation of Ulster in the 1700s by English and Scottish people call themselves British. But it is quite evident that there is heavy resistance to this. The troubles only officially ended in 1998. A significant portion would clearly call themselves Irish and object to being called British.

Note though, I was talking about the term Britain, not British. When I live in Canada in a few days, I will no longer be in Britain, but I will still be considered British. There is a clear difference in usage, that I don't want to go into further than I already have.

I was talking about Britain and that refers to England and Wales.
