I’ve seen us coast through pre seasons and be bang average in the real season.

Means v little, winning is great. Competitive matches against tough opposition is the important thing.

They’ve won every game, including impressive wins against Stoke and Preston. Interesting that Richardson can get his team playing straight away, and doesn’t demand months to allow his team to gel.

Not really that interesting, most of the players have already played with each other.

Will be one to watch though to see how they get on, on paper they should be tidy. See edwards was missing today

Just looking at the Wigan team that started for the Preston win, 7 out of their 11 players were new signings including a trialist, which is the same number of new players that we started today.

I’m not saying Richardson is a better manager than Cook, but he is certainly able to coach and assemble a competitive team faster than him - Interesting to see how much we will differ when the league begins.

So what you are really saying is that any decent manager can get a load of new players, stick them on a field and win every game, as proven by Wigan. So the logical conclusion is all Cook’s previous success are down to Richardson - as proven by these pre-season results. Its a view shared by the many outers, I’m sure.

They're new signings but across the team you've had players who have already played with another player - 1 not just at the same club, but also the same club with Leam involved. Not everyone clearly, but in different areas. And that does indeed make a massive difference.

I will however throw in, that I don't think PC has got his style across yet, and not because he hasn't had time yet, but I don't think he knows what it is yet and that does slightly concern me so im am able to be neutral and not all pro PC lol.

Style of formation?

When he joined the podcasters from his previous clubs said one thing that's for sure is he is 4-2-3-1 all the way.

I guess one advantage Richardson has is that hes been at Wigan for 4 years, so knows the club inside out. This also means he knows his players and exactly what needed to change.

Yeah he's always been a 4 2 3 1 man and it was a style of getting forward, wide, whipping balls in. Didnt see today so can't comment so it may have been that but from the games i've seen so far, i've not seen to many occasions where we've whipped it in from all positions... but also this 2 striker but not a flat 2 is a bit strange and un PC like.

We'll see, I don't really know Pigott other than being a striker, so maybe he's ok at dropping slightly deeper and I guess playing the Kane role?

I don't think that we managed to win a pre-season friendly in 1991. Since then I have given little attention to results.

The noise from the club is that they are well received, but that may change if things don't go well of course. All coaches have to start somewhere and i guess PC has had a lot of success with picking his coaches in the past, I just think if PC is to succeed then we have to see from the squad the football he got played at his last clubs.... so far we've not seen it yet

I'm sure they are nice guys.

All coaches has to start somewhere, but usually helps if there is an experienced / well respected coach in the mix.

Watching today's game we started with a 4-4-2 with Piggot and Bonne up front, then changed to a 4-2-3-1 with KVY and Chapin on the wings after the third goal, then eventually subbed Norwood and Jackson on, only to play Jackson on the right wing.

I do find it a bit odd that Cook is persisting with this 4-4-2 formation, when he managed to get Wigan promoted with a record number of goals just playing one up front.

Would rather he just kept things simple by using the formation he specialises in, as this preseason has felt like a bit of a confusion between those two identities.

I'm hoping he's just trying to be a bit 'modern' and trying work with a formation that can fluidly change with the flow of the game.. No problem having 2 strikers on the the pitch and having a fluid change, but only if the players can do it, and that's the key if we're not going with a normal '10' then can Piggot, or Nors etc do the job. No issue with him doing that if it eventually works, but there is that worry in the back of my mind that like some, last season isn't entirely out of his mind and he is feeling the pressure.

I would as you say rather he stick to a flat 4 2 3 1, normal no.10 get that ball wide, get the fullbacks overlapping and whipping the balls in from all angles causing havoc.

This seems to be an annual reminder.

I give you 1991/92. We went up as Champions!

Lost to two Finnish part timers, drew with lowly Lincoln and Peterborough and got humped at Scunthorpe!

We went on to have one of the most memorable seasons ever.

Yet people are losing their sh*t over losing to a well settled, decent side from the level above who were clinical when we have a team of players who’ve never played together.

Imagine this place back then after failing to win in 5 matches of 6 against teams vastly inferior. It would have been meltdown-tastic.

Pre-season means nothing. Our strongest side or thereabouts has played well in parts to compete with or contain a settled premier league side and a settled upper mid-table championship side when everyone bar a couple are new to the club, everyone is fitting into a new system, there are no partnerships, not sure what people expect.

We face Morecambe, Burton and Cheltenham in a very long season. More than enough reasons to believe we can start well.

Cook knows 4231 inside out. You can guarantee the players work on it frequently in training.

What Cook mentioned the other night is teams coming here this season and defending and us needing more than one striker.

I like that he’s been willing to try things in these matches, instead of waiting until we need it in the league and it not quite clicking.

Pre-season is about fitness, getting to grips with the system and tactics, forging partnerships and then results. We’ve lost to a team a division above that have a settled side. There’s really nothing to see here.

Fortunately we got away with not signing him in 1991/92.

Just hoping we don’t regret missing out on signing ‘own goal’ over this summer, seeing how prolific he was for us last term compared to our other options.

Genuine question, have Wigan banged on to their fans about needing time to gel or having lots of patience?

Wigan havent replaced their whole squad. And as mentioned above. Lots of players there have played with each other and also the manager before so it's a different situation to ours.

Doesn't answer my question, and for what its worth the situations are pretty comparable when you look at the number of new players they're integrating, the slight difference is negated when you consider our spending power to give us a better chance of getting the right player in the first place.
