Barry & Jacobs both coming is quite logical when you think about it 10:04 - Aug 6 with 3305 viewsSomethingBlue

Wide forward options: Burns, Dobra, Jacobs, Barry (/Chaplin?)
10 options: Fraser, Chaplin (/Dobra?)
CF options: Piggott, Norwood, Bonne (/Chaplin, Barry if play a two)

Think that's exactly the depth and flexibility we need in order to be serious. Now for CM (two if Nolan doesn't come back), CB, LB and that's us done.

Not signed to play?

Burns was a wingback
Fraser was CM and AM last season

Only thing we're missing is another LB and CB, Coulsen probably the left back so just another CB and we're done.

Fraser certainly didn’t play the deeper lying midfield role that Cook requires - another body there is our number 1 requirement

Didn't say he played the deeper role, but in a 4 4 2 he has played a CM role, which would work with Harper being the deeper if needed.

Depends if we do indeed get another CM.

For me, priority needs to be CB and LB

CM in a 4-4-2 (presumably he had a more defensively minded player alongside) is different to playing in the 2 of a 4-2-3-1.

I agree, and if we do get another CM it would make sense. But for now I wouldn't be shocked to see Fraser or even burns drop in if needed. Really depends on PC and what he see's

agree completely CM is a top priority.
Cook's preferred formation is clearly 4231 and so to say that we can switch to 442 if one of only two midfielders that we have who can play that position is ridiculous.
You build a squad to play and provide cover for your preferred formation - you don't just take a chance that there will be no injuries or suspensions to those key two players and simply switch to 442 if there are...that's how you end up with square pegs in round holes and I'm sure we've all had enough of that over the last few seasons...

Burns seems the most natural on the right side of the attacking three so I think he might be a starter. I wonder whether, as Joe mentions, Dobra could go out on loan, even if it's just until January.

Burns who was wanted by Championship teams and has done well in pre-season when played and we want to leave him out of our team?

And obviously Downes is still in the building, so he could be the deeper lying CM.

I'd suggest we can't afford to leave him in the U23s if no-one offers the money we want.

He can't afford to stay there either, his career will go off a cliff if things haven't happened one way or the other by the end of the month. But seems he has little intention of playing for Town again.

If no-one offers us the money we are happy with, he may not have much choice.

All he has to do is show that he wants to, he's done nothing to show any form of intent on playing for the first team. regardless of what he thinks of PC or what others think of PC, all Downes is doing is killing his own career

Does 9 players for 4 positions fit with Cook's tight-knit squad thing? Any week when they're all fit that's at least 2 out of the matchday squad entirely I'd say...

Thinking the same!

Burns as a central midfielder in a 4231? Have you seen him play - he is an out and out wide player.

We are much better stocked at CB than we are in midfield - in midfield we are an injury to Evans away from a disaster really.

Pre-season aside, where would Burns' career to date rank amongst our attacking midfielders? Certainly below Chaplin, Fraser and Jacobs.

Would be interesting to see if the current management team would be able to persuade him. He preferred to stay and fight for his place here last time he was offered a loan and that seemed to work better for him than the others who went out. However, I think Salford would be a different prospect and hopefully we would only agree if it is highly likely he would play.

We should probably stop fleecing out our youngsters to random clubs where they aren't even allowed to make the bench. Any loans should include a large amount of minimum games clause or massive fines for the loaning club otherwise they might as well stay here as backups...
