We could / should have won that 08:31 - Aug 8 with 2698 viewsnorfsufblue

Even allowing for gelling issues...once that equaliser went we had them rattled..

I felt that instead of really bombing forward and taking advantage of the uplift in the crowd we took a collective sigh of relief and let them off the hook.

Never mind though, I'm sure once we realise what a good side we are going to be that will come naturally and the positive is that in the past 3 years we deffo would have lost that.

They were half chances at best really. Happy to agree to disagree, but didn't think it was a game where we could honestly say we deserved the win.

I don't like this idea of 'deserving' a result in football.

Football is such a simple game, the idea is to score more than your opponents, that you generally get the result you deserve.

The exception to this is when events outside of the control of either team, like egregious refereeing decisions (Alan Young vs Wycombe for instance) make the difference.

Otherwise it is simply a case of one team being better at scoring goals than the other is at stopping them doing that.

It's fair enough to compare by saying that one team dominated, or another team played better football, but if that doesn't lead to scoring enough to win then they don't 'deserve' to.

This isn't a dig a t you Herbs, just a general observation about the idea of 'deserving' to ein.

I don't take that as a dig at all, I think that's a fair enough argument. Taking chances (or not) isn't a matter of luck, of course if you're creating lots of chances you're probably more likely to win and if you don't it's because you've not converted those chances. I guess my point was that yesterday didn't feel like a game where we were especially dominant and creating a lot of chances. We were actually pretty clinical in taking our best two opportunities of the game.

Didn’t think we deserved to win, but real positive signs that we want to move it forwards quicker.

Not too bothered about the front four. They’ll have to compete and fight for their places and the competition for places is pretty intense there. It should come good over time. We haven’t been buying has-beens or players from lower level in those positions.

Evans and Harper look a class act.

Pretty much everyone in agreement that an experienced CB is needed. Backup CM also and hope Coulson is an upgrade on Penney.
Get the defence sorted and let the players fight it out for the front four places.

That's very fair about deserving to win which is why in my OP said should/ could have won.... I still feel if we had played that game later in the season with a fully functional tight team we would have overwhelmed them after the equaliser like GBs teams used to do regularly at home.?

Dominated possession?

Pass accuracy was good?

Harper and Evans?

Got a draw when a loss (would we have deserved to lose?) was on the cards - so not giving up..

Surely more positives to take than negatives that are all fixable.

I think there is, although on the whole I think we were poor for large parts of the game yesterday. There's signs that if/when it clicks we'll be good, as with the first goal, but the front 4 looked very disjointed and I wasn't overly impressed with any of them individually. Defence needs work as well, Penney I don't think is the answer at left back and we could do with an experienced head at CB.

I did, although according to some because I boycotted watching us on iFollow for a couple of months last season I'm not a real fan. Go figure.

For all the mitigating circumstances it was a poor result, the saving grace being that a point is better than a loss.

Worth pointing out that had we gone a goal down like that under Free Beer and Improved Football, we'd have folded and lost 2-0 rather than coming back twice.

I'm one of the people who was blamed for getting Paul Cook sacked. PM for the full post.
