I would say top two and to be at least within touching distance of that by Christmas.

So just 1 example and loads of the opposite?

Palace in the early 00s are another. I remember them coming down here on think it was Boxing Day, languishing something like 18th having just hired Iain Dowie as manager. We were riding high but got pummelled 3-1. They went on a superb run of form post Christmas, made the play offs and went up.

same as many others - top 2 expectation but live with top 6; settled and winning by end Sept

I’d expect us to be comfortably top 6 by the end of the season. As for time to gel, the time to judge him is at the end of the season and not before, unless we get sucked into a Paul Hurst type mire (can’t see that happening).

I still remain to be convinced that he is the right man to take us forward, but we have to trust the process and give it time…and that means until the end of this season at the very least.

It's called 'building momentum'. It happens as teams gain confidence and familiarity. There are other examples beyond Blackpool. Oxford did similar, although ultimately fell short.

As I posted the other day though 5 of the 6 sides that have gone up since we've been at this level were well in the promotion mix at halfway and most of them more or less from the first month. Even Blackpool were only a point or two off the top 6 come halfway.

Six points off at the halfway point. After we beat them, in the following match, they were nine points adrift.

Presumably that is related to various other points in the lead up. I.e. can't be bottom in October to achieve top 2 mix at Xmas

They are outliers though and not the norm. We should really be aiming to do what the majority of sides do and be in touch throughout.

Promotion. Whether that is top 2 or through the play offs, but ultimately it's getting out of this league one way or another by the end of this season. Still withholding judgement on PC until we've played 10 league games this season with 'HIS' players. Not going to get too overexcited or too disappointed and assess it for what it is in the meantime.

In the first half of the season it's still possible to shoot up the table by putting together a modest string of victories, given points totals are still quite low.

After all, four games into October last season Blackpool were a single goal difference off the bottom of the table. Yet they finished 3rd, despite another iffy spell in December.

Properly clicking by end of September, multiple good runs of wins throughout the season.

getting points from the likes of Sunderland, Sheff Wed and whoever else is up there - I can't remember winning many games in the last 2 years against the "top teams"

Cook to stay if we don't win the play offs, if it looks like we can move on

If I was watching another team spend this kind of money on these players, I'd expect them to end up champions.

I think the number of Covid postponements may have thrown the table out slightly; this is according to the BBC after they played Northampton (to the right hand side). Albeit they had a game in hand on all but Doncaster.

ETA - sorry, see what you were saying, at the 23 match stage (no matter when each side played that game) Blackpool were one off.

It doesn't work like that a lot of the time though - Derby have overspent year after year and always fell short, often having a good side on paper. Man U have spent a fortune in the last decade, but have very rarely looked a force to be reckoned with.

We have been rotting for years. Players have got worse and worse, management the same except for one anomaly, ownership disinterested and bad at decision-making, disillusioned fan base. Sweeping that all aside in one Summer will be a massive achievement, regardless of the investment.

The Championship and the Premier League are a different kettle of fish though, aren't they? Derby and Man U can spend a fortune and still find themselves battling other clubs that have spent similar or more.

In League One, it pretty much does work like that most of the time. Some big clubs get stuck down here for a while because they're overloaded with expensive contracts for the bad players who got them relegated. Some get stuck down here because relegation wrecks their financial stability. But I can't think of too many big clubs that spent big in this league but were still unsuccessful.

Absolutely nothing less than promotion and preferably not via the playoffs.

As for gelling, simply get to winning ways as this breeds confidence - crucial in any sport - and resilience which takes off the pressure the undeniable weight of expectation from the owners, a chunk of the fanbase, the media and also the players themselves some of whom have stated that they either don't want or expect to be in this league next season. As you point out, the longer we leave getting to winning ways the more we leave ourselves to do and ramp up unneccessary pressure leading to a crisis of confidence. That needs to start with a win at Cheltenham because after that the fixture list starts to look a bit more challenging.

At this juncture I'm really not fussed by attractive football, get promoted and spend a couple of years in the Championship fannying around with that before pushing on.

Expectation is top 2.

What I think will happen is top 6.

If we are not clicking by the Doncaster game (Sept 28th) then I will be worried.

I expect us to competing at the top end of the table given the resources

No timescale - just want to see a steady progression. It doesn't matter when a run comes, as long as it does.

Mid Sept is fair to be winning on a consistent basis. Free passes need to stop eventually!!!!

Nothing less than top 2 is acceptable.

No need to panic at this stage. We are a bunch of strangers getting to know each other’s game. It’s going to take until October at the earliest for this team to start playing to their full potential.

The right people are running the club.

Hey now, hey now, don't dream it's over
