US Government have invested nearly $90 billion over 20 years and a force 1/4 of the military has overwhelmed the country in a matter of weeks. Absolutely unbelievable.
What an utter waste of time, money and effort. Straight back to square one. The poor civilians who are now to be governed by an incredibly harmful and oppressive regime....again.

Kabul has fallen. Government collapsed or fled, police and army gone home, Taliban forces entering the city 'to preserve law and order'.
Why does the Army not fight to defend the city, i thought that was what Armies were supposed to do?
Edit - it looks like your later link answers my question!
Edit2 - having read the article, even allowing for the corruption etc, that must be the most pathetic army in the world. They've just run off - what was the point of them!

Disorganisation, reliance on the US and fatally, corruption.

Actually, it’s square minus two or three. Back in 2001, the Taliban had nowhere near the control it now has.
Not saying that the US should have pulled out but there needs to be another approach if that’s the result of 20 years’ presence and over a trillion dollars, I read.

Why fight when your government is corrupt and dodgy, your senior officers have legged it, you haven't been paid for months, your foreign backup has left and you're faced with ferocious fanatics who don't have a great record with taking care of POWs? Far better to go home to your family and pretend it was nothing to do with you.
Armies are composed of human beings. They'll often fight in desperate circumstances, starving, surrounded or outnumbered. But won't if they have no faith in the cause they're defending and are not taken care of.
This is a pretty interesting watch and gives you some idea of how the entire country got rolled in 72 hours. Can't feel anything but sorrow for the people of that country who have endured so much suffering and will continue to do so.

Apparently the UK ambassador is currently desperately processing visas for the Afghans who helped us out there as interpreters and their families. He should have left hours ago, but felt that he had to sort this out.
Priti Patel will probably arrest him when he gets back here.

That’s what FCDO and our diplomatic service does. It is always the last to leave.
We had a “wheels up” situation in South Sudan a few years ago with the hostile forces closing in
