Set pieces 10:38 - Aug 30 with 1231 viewsclive_baker

What is it about our club that we can barely beat a first man at a corner. I’m sure we over index in absolutely dog sh1t set pieces and have done for years. Must be a curse.

Bloody awful isn't it, and not a difficult skill either, embarrassing,

Apart from that period where Gill clearly stepped up last season and we scored a whole load from set pieces. There's a fairly obvious inference to be drawn about the amount of time we spent on them in training.

Said exactly the same thing on Saturday. New owners, new manager, new coaches, new squad. Yet we still can't deliver a corner kick and we still take short free kicks that do nothing to improve the position and just put us under pressure.

Surely at this level every set piece in the opposition half should end up in the box. Other sides do this and cause mayhem.

Or that any defensive training is ineffective .

At the Cheltenham match, I was thinking how good our corners were in comparison with recent seasons. Flatter, faster and not so often over- or under-hit. Presumably that hasn't continued (I didn't see Saturday's game)?

Zero successful crosses on the iFollow stats again this weekend, not for the first time either. I know statistically conversion rates for corners are low, but our continually ineffective attempts at the near post flick-on that come off their first man are getting embarrassing.

Our corners in particular were dreadful on Saturday.

I was born underwater, I dried out in the sun. I started humping volcanoes baby, when I was too young.

I guess on the practice field they are OK as we defend them woefully.

Maybe that's the problem - we train to defend from our own poor corners?

Strange isn't it, what's even more strange is that it seems individual players don't spend a massive amount of their time on this, corners, 25yrd free kicks, whipping in crosses, big parts of the game.......Beckham spent two hours a day AFTER training sessions on this for example, dedication, the real want to get better and better..

It is incredibly frustrating how many times we fail to beat the first man. These basics make all the difference over a season.

"You've got to beat the first man" was Beattie's vocal tic when he was co commentating on Radio Suffolk, and I hear his voice in my head every single time the near post defender heads clear with ease. I hear it too often!

Weren’t we praising the set pieces in pre season!

By the looks of it - The more we train- we get further from the target!

I came away from the preseason game against Palace feeling fairly impressed with Hladky on first viewing. Hopefully the start he’s had to the season proper isn’t his true level for whenever he’s called upon, as Walton would presumably now be first choice. It does show you can’t always tell from preseason though!

Ha, yep! Multiple times a game. Would love to see some in depth stats and analysis on our corners.
