What’s the point of GCSEs? 17:18 - Sep 1 with 6208 views | MattinLondon | Without wishing to belittle anyone’s academic achievement- what exactly is the point of GCSEs? School age is 18 now so why aren’t exams just sat then? Seems a bit unfair to put kids under so much pressure at 16 for qualifications that not a lot of people really care about. Think this would allow more emphasis on practical stuff like mental arithmetic, money management and how to chance a plug. Or maybe this doesn’t make sense at all and GCSEs have a role?

GCSEs are pretty pointless, that's true. However, let's not make the next generations even more snowflake by removing 'pressure' on them. They need to learn to deal with it coz that's life!

What’s the point of GCSEs? on 13:09 - Sep 3 by Dubtractor | Interesting thread this. I have mixed feelings on it all as someone with a somewhat variable academic record. I was really good at factual stuff, so maths and science I did pretty well at. But more academic and subjective subjects I just never got good grades at all. I managed a u at a level sociology! If I was judged purely on academic results I wouldn't have the job I have now, but it has taken me a long while to get here. No lying about results involved! That said, there needs to be something to measure people by aged 16/18 to have some idea of what people are capable of. I do feel that exam results are a bit of a blunt tool though. |
When we have taken apprentices on they have to have at least a C in GCSE English and Maths (or whatever current equivalent is) We've done it previously when people have missed out on Cs, and they just struggle too much with the functional skills aspect of the apprenticeship which they need to pass it. If people aren't able to commit to getting the required results as a minimum then you'll likely get found out quite quickly in any job

Another one throwing people on the scrapheap due to a letter on a piece of paper.

Surely if they’re pointless then there is no pressure?

Just need to carry on pretending they're important. The exam 'experience' is important as we are all judged and scrutinised throughout our working lives.

Or someone who has experienced how it works in the real world when people can't get things passed and subsequently can't progress their career

Er, he gave his reasons why, He gave someone the opportunity who hadn't passed the required level and they struggled. Don't know what more he could do.

I read this excerpt as rather blanket and I do not strictly agree; "If people aren't able to commit to getting the required results as a minimum then you'll likely get found out quite quickly in any job" I disagree with that quite robustly but its been a good thread to partake in. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

You can disagree as much as you want, but ultimately in my industry if anyone wants to complete an apprenticeship if they have struggled to get their grades in the first place then it gets harder, not easier, when they are at college to subsequently do so. And often leads to them dropping out of the course which means we lose any apprenticeship funding and likely an employee. If people have failed to make grades, then they have to do their apprenticeship without employer backing until they can get up to speed. Once people get past this, then grades are pretty unimportant in my industry - but if they can't get the basic qualifications then they can't get certified for CSCS cards properly as don't have their trade tickets
