Vaccine passport plan being scrapped 11:52 - Sep 12 with 1305 views | pointofblue | https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-58535258 Utterly stupid IMO - an easy way to keep Covid, to a degree, under control, though obviously there’d need to be proof of a negative test for those who cannot have the vaccines for health reasons.

And the Lib Dem’s, and perhaps Labour too, though the article is slightly less clear. I wonder if it’s being dropped because they’ve realised they wouldn’t get it through the House? Can’t see why there’s opposition to it.

There is evidence that mandating covid passports is counter productive and will lead to a hardening of positions for many anti-vaccers. It feeds their narrative and will lead to less, not more uptake of vaccines. A sage member wrote as much recently, sure you can research it / read it - but that was the gist of it. Agree with you that it has likely been dropped due to the likelyhood of it not passing in the commons.

Anti-vaxxers will use any excuse to 'harden their position'. After all, anything handed down from the authorities "proves" their theory that it's a grand establishment conspiracy to oppress them. On the other hand, an absence of pressure allows them unchallenged space to flourish. They aren't going to be persuaded by moderation. Public health is not going to win either way, so you may as well just go ahead and impose what has to be done, if it's really necessary - which should be guided by reputable scientific advice, not a need to pussy-foot around a small (but loud) minority of nutters who are never going to change their peculiar, internet-driven views whatever anyone says. Or, for that matter libertarian nutters in Parliament who put their individual "freedom" (often to make personal fortunes) above the good of the wider populace.

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2021/aug/31/vaccine-passports-will-make-hesita Why would anyone want to implement a policy if it shown to be likely to result in fewer vaccinations? It is counter intuitive, but that is the evidence. We also have some of the highest rates in the world of vaccine uptake in the UK.

They are not persuaded by having x25 greater chance of death. They are beyond reason.

Its not likely to appeal to their voting base either, many with Libertarian ideals (not that they generally control the virus very well)

There really isn’t evidence to show a vaccine passport is counter productive. To be counter productive it would need people already vaccinated to get themselves unvaccinated which is of course impossible. You don’t need to introduce a vaccine passport anyway. I have just been on a cruise where I had to produce evidence of vaccination by showing the appropriate NHS app, also required to be tested on arrival at Southampton and to show the text confirming a negative result, received 25 minutes later, before allowed to board. I very much doubt had this been voted on in parliament that opposition parties would have voted against it.

The only reason, let’s be very clear here, the only reason that vaccine passports have been dropped by the Johnson administration, is because the ERG nutters (forgotten what they’ve rebranded as) on his benches, will not support them. It has nothing to do with health, nothing to do with what protects people. It’s protecting Johnson’s premiership. It could be the right call, it could be the wrong call.

It’s the CRG now. Not exactly a subtle cover is it? It’s preventing a challenge to Johnson’s leadership. Nothing else.
