Ten to One, eric, Piggott hat trick...you let the goldfish go...
Many years ago I went to the pub (Irish one in Cambridge) with Paul Durcan (and a lot of other. local, poetry types). Then a few years ago I found 'Enlightenment' in a charity shop in Portree, at the weekend I was driving back from Inverness by the shores of the loch in late evening listening to it and I thought 'that's not Van's voice' and scrabbled around looking at the sleeve notes as I drove to find that I had been to the pub with the poet on Van's song - serendipity.

Paul Durcan is a famous poet, i didn't realize. That's why your writing is second to none when your in full flow.
Thank you for those kind words, eric. And they have reminded me that my favourite living poet is from the land of Skippy, and may even have been the blueprint for Barry Humphries second most famous creation, Sir Les Patterson ('My mother used to say that there are no strangers, only friends you haven't met yet. She's now in a maximum security twilight home in Australia.')
The words being spoken in this ad are from Murray's poem 'The Dream of Wearing Shorts Forever'. The only time I have seen Les Murray read live was at Kimbolton School and I mentioned to him at the break how life changing that poem had been for me. So during the second half he said that someone had been talking to him about a poem he hadn't read for a while and gave a good performance of it. Top bloke.
