Left Back John Compton aka Fred, as has been pointed out on another thread, is one of four survivors of the "...And we won the Football League" era (60 years ago this season). The others are Doug (Dixie) Moran, Ray Crawford and Andy Nelson.

Does any other oldie or nerd on here know why Compton left Town at the age of 26/7 and only played one more season of professional football?

Sounds like you'll need a historian for that.

Probably as simple as Bournemouth offered and town accepted... maybe injury ended him early.

I googled and saw mention of him becoming a driver for Texaco for 34 years, and the reason was that the pay was better...

I supposed it was actually injury, but just wondered if anyone knew the story. Someone surely would, but may not be on this board.

That sudden departure earned him the nickname "Straight Outta" Compton.

I'm so sorry.
