....still can't match the real deal. Fancy!

https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2021/oct/03/labour-conference-fails-to-give

“The early data from after the conference, with most of the fieldwork taking place immediately after the leader’s speech on Wednesday, saw the Conservatives retain a narrow lead and Starmer’s approval ratings hold stubbornly in negative territory. This is despite a crisis that voters both directly blame the government for handling poorly and also blame its flagship policy of Brexit for contributing to. It appears Labour has yet to demonstrate that it would be an improvement on the current government, despite its flaws.”

I should be a fairly natural Labour voter noe, being absolutely anti-Johnson's alt-right t-right agenda. I am equally anti-pure socialism, so a moderate Tory or Blairite Labour offering would kinda suit me. now

But Starmer is utterly gutless, offering no effective opposition at all. And, as a headline Remoaner, he offers me not even a crumb of comfort on my main issue.

You don’t have to be afraid of “pure socialism”. In the modern, developed nations, all serious socialists work within a market economy framework. Even the “far left” Corbyn was only offering a shift to a more social democratic footing. It’s our shift rightwards that’s pushed social democracy to the very fringe of the Overton window.

Blairite Labour or soft Tories are centre-right. That wouldn’t be a problem if there was a centre-left alternative to keep things in check. But when that becomes the opposition to the right we see the results. Blair’s government was better than the Tories but pretty much cemented our direction of travel to the right and Brexit, Johnson/Cummings etc. because it never delivered a compelling vision of how genuine social democratic policies and values worked.
