Our next priority: sort out our away form 08:56 - Oct 11 with 3186 views | Darth_Koont | 4 of the next 5 games are away from home. The next set of games already seems to be a defining spell to see if we can maintain the gradual improvement and keep pace with the top of the table. But this will be asking a lot. The settled defence and Morsy are a change from the beginning of the season so should give us something to build on. But wonder if we’ll see a slight change ahead of them to make us tougher on the road? I wouldn’t be averse to seeing El Mizouni in there alongside Morsy. And maybe think about adding a bit more work rate and strength in the front 4 like playing Pigott behind Bonne and with Chaplin and Burns to the side? Alternatively, we might have turned a corner, learnt a lesson from the Accrington game and we stick with a winning side ... but I do think we need to be able to keep the ball higher up the pitch for longer when playing away.

Our next priority: sort out our away form on 09:12 - Oct 11 by itfcjoe | I know people don't like to go back to last season, but since Cook has come in, our away form is absolutely awful Gillingham - L -1-3 Fleetwood - L - 0-2 Portsmouth - L - 1-2 Wigan - D - 0-0 Rochdale - D - 0-0 AFC Wimbledon - L - 0-3 Charlton - D - 0-0 Northampton - L - 0-3 Swindon - W - 2-1 Shrewsbury - D - 0-0 Burton - L - 1-2 Cheltenham - L - 1-2 Lincoln - W - 1-0 Accrington - L - 1-2 Played 14 Won - 2 Drawn - 4 (All of which were 0-0) Lost - 8 For - 8 Against - 20 When we tried to attack away we conceded goals, when we tried to shut the door we were absolutely impotent going forwards......and the manner of the 3 away defeats this season is a huge concern. If we can't turn that away from round in the next 5 games, then Cook is not going to be able to lead us to promotion this season. We need to compete first and foremost, earn the right to play and be able to see out the tough periods of the game |
I must be an optimist because all I see here is won one lost one lol! I’m firmly in the camp that discounts last season, and I also give allowance for the first 2 away games during a period where the team was unsettled and new players were still coming in. If you’re only point here is that it’s an abysmal record, agreed. If you are also saying this is an accurate predictor of the next 5 away games, I can’t agree. But time will tell. Accrington was a real disappointment, and more of a concern than any of the other poor away results up to now. COYBs!!

Our next priority: sort out our away form on 11:20 - Oct 11 by Darth_Koont | Not in the same manner from what I saw. Missed opportunities and slack defending vs. Burton. Missed opportunities and a horror show against long throw-ins vs. Cheltenham Didn’t do enough in the opposition half (with the ball and defending from the front) vs. Accrington. We’re a lot better defensively based on the first two, and hopefully we’ve learnt our lesson from Accrington re: being a lot braver and tougher in midfield and attack. The team is evolving and slowly making small gains. But yes, we need to be stronger and more productive away from home hence my OP. |
We conceded two at Accrington, the same as at Cheltenham, so not at all convinced that can be spun as a defensive improvement. Cheltenham didn't create a lot, nor did Accrington, we just gave both two sloppy goals. In both games we completely lost control of the match, couldn't keep possession or get ourselves up the pitch. Very similar for me, except we were more threatening first half against Cheltenham and should have already put the game to bed by half time.

So in judging Cook's record here you're discounting all of last season and the first month of this season? If our poor away record continues will you discount all fixtures up to Christmas and only start judging him on his 2022 form?

Our next priority: sort out our away form on 09:18 - Oct 11 by Darth_Koont | I know people don’t like it but I almost completely ignore last season. Yes, Cook didn’t get a tune out of them but that was no surprise either. It’s a completely different job and about building a team and performances from scratch. |
That’s where I’ve been with this season and last… A big number of starters for us last season are currently failing in L2, in the same team, so really does speak volumes of the quality However, we do need to start picking up results on the road, a nice little 6 from 2 would be perfect in coming games, mainly because I’m going to both!

Only really Chambers and Judge that were starting regularly for us who are now in League 2 isn't it? Sears, Drinan, Hawkins, Skuse barely started between them

Think the away record for the whole of last season was pretty poor. After the Blackpool win in October, we had an awful run away from home - other than Burton who were bottom, I seem to recall we only won away from home, when the opposition was down to 10 men (Plymouth & Accrington). It has been an area needing improvement for a long long time.

Our next priority: sort out our away form on 20:25 - Oct 11 by Keaneish | Fratton Park will be a watershed night, whichever way it falls. Right now, I have no idea. |
Totally agree If we get the 3 points as expected at Cambridge (I’m expecting a reaction from players after the second half of the first half against the Shrews), then Pompey game becomes a chance to lay down a marker… beat a rival, away, 3 wins on the bounce, 2 away in a row But for me that sounds very incredible and unlikely We just seem to have a glass jaw, and too many key players seem to give a 5-6 performance not a 7!

Our next priority: sort out our away form on 12:35 - Oct 12 with 374 views | franz_tyson | Not so sure our back four is settled. I thought Burgess looked shaky. I wouldn’t be surprised if Toto gets an opportunity at some point. Edmundson looks the steadier of the two current CB’s. I think Edmundson has played LCB before so maybe he could slide across for Toto/Woolf. At least we have competition in the side and certain players need to up their game. If El Miz can’t yet break into the side, then at least he can put a bit of pressure on Evans. These away games coming up we really need a bit more energy and bite and El Miz does appear really appear like he’s added a bit of physicality to his game. Really expected more from Evans in terms of physicality and controlling games Wouldn’t be surprised if Chaplin becomes a permanent fixture in the side. Don’t think Celina should walk straight back into the number 10 role. Not convinced yet about Celina and if we actually really need him. I’d rather have Chaplin as number 10 if you need an extra body in the box.
