We're only 10 points off top 17:07 - Oct 23 with 10403 viewsBloomBlue

And to think some people were only claiming a couple of weeks the top 2 places were gone already.

10 points is nothing when we're not in Nov yet.

We will get promoted via the automatic places, believe

But in the remaining 32 games it’s seemingly an impossible task to close a 10 point gap?

Considering the fact that as the season grinds on, we have the squad depth advantage.

Well in four games in two weeks, where we have won three of them, we've only gained four points. You kind of disprove your own point as we've made up barely any ground.

The top two are in such good form and if one of them drops, you have clubs like Rotherham who are also in really good form. We've left ourselves too much to do, probably.

Plymouth, Wycombe, Rotherham, Oxford, Sunderland and Crewe to see out November.

6 games, all incredibly difficult, even Crewe if they're rooted will be starting to go into fight mode.

If we come through those fixtures and find ourselves 10 points off top, still and no further off the playoffs than we are now given the 3 hardest of those are away, then we're well poised.

Our squad depth could well be cruicial come the latter stages.

Lots of twists and turns to come for sure.

Crewe are also a bogey team for us of sorts. Every time they seem like an easy scalp, they ding us.

You don’t seem to want discourse but here goes. We’re 10 games unbeaten so you’re wrong, this season has not been an overall picture of failure so far. It was a bad start (with a mitigating background) and it’s being rectified. The players seem to know the system much better; we’re scoring loads of goals: and the team at this point has forgotten how to lose.

Did you forget about Stanley?

14? Gap between us and top spot working back from 10 pts today per game played is, 12, 12, 10, 12, 12, 12, 10, 12 after 6 played. Not impossible but pretty close to it.

That all changes if we turn up and beat any of the top 6 over next 10 games.

Plus teams like Plymouth will no doubt have injuries / suspensions / loss of form at some point and do not have the squad depth we have.

Its up to us and I think playing the in form teams may benefit us as they will be on the front foot looking to win the game and not parking the bus hoping for a draw so should leave space for us to play.

It's entirely in our hands. Seven of our next nine games are against teams currently in and around the top six. It's a great opportunity. The squad is knitting together both on and off the pitch. As I've said previously, with so many new faces - each with their own personal lives to sort as well as fitting into a new-look team - it was always going to take time. It doesn't frankly matter how many points you have after 6-7 games if you still reach the target by week 46.

It's October, everything is still everyone's hands - Crewe can still get 100 points if they win every game - but you have to be realsitic as to what can be achieveed from where we are and talking about automatic promotion is not where we should be at the moment.

Given that we're adapting into a rhythm, not you or anyone knows where we are. We're at a point where we should simply start enjoying games on a week by week basis and stop calling for caution.

What does calling for caution actually do anyway? Not a lot really - just means people get to hedge their bets and say "I told you so" later on. That's not being a fanatic, that's being a killjoy.

Just more managing expectation.

A bit like every manager does.

Not too high after a win, not too low after a loss.

The rollercoaster of emotions is great though isn't it? lol!

The important thing to note here, is whilst those teams are all teams that are below us now, they weren't necessarily below us when we played them. Lets hope we can make it so that some more teams end up below us after we've played them.

This is a picture of why we are correct to be optimistic at the moment

[Post edited 25 Oct 2021 9:36]

For sure, it's been a good little run and our current for is great. No issues there at all, but given how low those teams are in the table I think we just need to be aware that there are much harder games to come in the next month.

Mind you, I don't want to put a lid on the optimism - it makes a nice change to have something to look forward to. For all we know, we could lift our game even more against the better teams. Sometimes the poorer teams can drag you down by breaking up the games and being too defensive. We may have some cracking games coming up that the team will hopefully be right up for (and we do have the quality to hurt anyone).

Aiye it is - just tired of the fact more people want to be right all the time at whatever cost - like some Grimwades level of Nostradamus.

Enjoy the success, questions the failures - never question the potential.

Why is it that a 94th minute winner against Fleetwood is almost seen as a negative to you, as if it almost doesn’t count as a win?

If we’d scored the winner in the 85th would that be better?

We won. We deserved to win.

Cheer up

No need to be so precious. The point is we're not exactly steamrollering sides in the lower half, so let's see how we go over this tougher run of fixtures before we start talking about automatic promotion as being possible. We've left ourselves a lot to do. We need title winning form from here on in to give ourselves a chance and that's after an opening 14 games that's been heavily skewed towards home games and facing lower half sides. Let's see how things progress rather than getting too far ahead of ourselves.

We win 2 back to back games against bottom half teams and sit in 10th and some are talking about automatic promotion......it's all very up and down and I don't think some fans realise how far we are off it at the moment.

We should be looking at each game to try and get ourselves in the top 6, that's the first target and achievable - if people become fixated on automatic promotion from this point on it can't be helpful because the run of form required is so difficult.

It's not about "I told you so" or anything like that - it's looking to see what is our most likely route out of this league and hoping we can get there - supporting the play off push, not flailing around hoping for a miracle

It's still October, given the teams currently at the top don't have the strength in depth we have, I'm quietly confident we can pull these numbers back.

But we have to beat teams in the top 6 for us to do so, now is the time to start putting our feet on throats.

Nope, I think it is a bit unhelpful talking about automatic when we are still a mile off it, have won back to back games for the first time this season and about to head into 2 tooth games.

It's just running before we can walk, and if we can get into a better position to strike towards the end of the season then so be it - but the targets for there here and now are to get into the top 6 and cement our place there, not to dream of the top 2. That can come later in the season.

If we are to get there it will be a hell of a ride, but effectively need to totally blitz the season from here on in

The expectation was automatic promotion and it is reasonable to be disappointed but I think after all the upheaval that finishing in the playoffs is not so bad.We need to keep up the momentum to even get there but things are on the up. Our defence is still flaky and we can't seem to handle teams that get in our face which are both areas that if they are not sorted, we won't be close to promotion.

10 points to gain on 3-4 teams is a lot - we could win the next 6 or 7 on the bounce and would still be behind them.

It’s a massive task, realistically we are aiming for the play offs unless we can string a ridiculous season together from here

Don't we have to play them all twice still? So theoretically that's 6 points up for grabs out of the 10 in just two games...I'm not saying that we will win them all but it's not as impossible as many keep suggesting...

No one is saying impossible, just very unlikely at the moment - bookies have us at 10/1 to get in the top two but a tad under 2/1 to get in the top 6 - which feels about right
