Those Newcastle owners have chosen the wrong club 14:11 - Nov 3 with 4047 viewsnodge_blue

Three managers reportedly turned them down.

World class players are never going to chose the north east of England to live. No matter how much wages Newcastle offer, which still has to be within financial fair play, they will still go to Barca or Madrid or London, Liverpool, Manchester.

And by the Xmas transfer window Newcastle could be so far behind that again top players will want to wait to see where they are at the end of the season.

Roy Keane said he couldn't get top players to Sunderland cos the wives wanted to shop in London. And it hasn't changed.

They chose badly.

Players didn't want to join Sunderland because Roy Keane was the manager, nothing to do with logistics. Newcastle will sign players like Lingard and Ward-Prowse at this time. The big statement players will come once they are top 6 or thereabouts. I am not saying either of those 2 will sign for Newcastle, but players of that standard will.

Players will generally follow the money. However, there will always be a hierarchy of clubs.

Its always going to be difficult to sign the right manager when bottom of the league and a closed transfer window.

Oh I do. You can have all the money in the world but if you have to constantly travel (down to London, up to Edinburgh) to spend it then whats the point?

Hmmmm, heard of the internet and personal shoppers?

Think Mrs Marquee Signing will mind a 5 day trip to London / Paris / New York / Dubai living it up in a 5* penthouse suite spending money?

If you think a player armed to the teeth in cash sits and spends money on the internet then you are mistaken.

London or at a push Manchester is always going to be a bigger draw for any player.

I like how we're not even entertaining Norwich as a PL club anymore!

I think it’s perhaps a case of them needing to be clearer about their strategy and how much they’re going to invest. I heard Emery wasn’t impressed at their lack of commitment, and given where they are in the league any manager worth their salt will want a war chest for January.

Manchester is very limited compared to London in terms of luxury lifestyle.

Its a pull because of the power of the football clubs, nothing else.

Mega rich players have people to source whatever they need, and their wives can go on luxury shopping trips in private jets.

Its really not an issue.

If Newcastle get their act together an become competitive, players will join them. There is currently only one real elite club in London, so that choice is limited.

They will just buy the best players from teams not in top 4 come January. Teams who are relegation fight won't turn there noses up on inflated transfer fees. Then you get the Fringe players of top teams who will go to Newcastle.

I think Newcastle is slightly underestimated on the attraction front, it's actually a really nice city, plenty of big stereotypical 'footballery' houses which are obviously cheaper than London, but on a par with Manchester.

Then to think that the train from Newcastle to London is under 3 hours and runs every 30 mins.....it's pretty well connected, takes as long to get to Manchester from there, madness! All seems amazing when you live on the East Coast of Suffolk though lol!

I agree that it will be a tough gig, but the money there will transform the entire place and with their clout, they will make it work, but at huge loss.

Will they care? Nope.

Young, late teens, early/mid 20s with cash on the hip do not get people to 'source' things for them. They go themselves, to be seen and to enjoy the trappings of their wealth.

Traipsing around an old coal mining town, dodging girls dressed for the sun in -10 heat and piles of sick does not compare with the West End, a *slightly* warmer climate and the shops/hotels/restaurants and crucially like minded colleagues from other local clubs that are all on your doorstep.

Newcastle and the like will always be up against it. Ask yourself, would you rather £100k a week in London or £150k a week in Newcastle? There will always be a point where throwing more money at someone still does not want them have to endure the lifestyle or location that comes with it.

They wont sign top players right away, I think they're targets have to be the next level down, either those on the fringes at big clubs or the best players from the Mid Premier League and lower.
Players like Lingard, Zaha, Coutinho, Oxlade Chamberlain, Barkley, Ward Prowse, Kalvin Phillips, Origi, Bale, Van de Beek, Martial, Henderson, Alli, Winks, Coady, Tarkowski, Lamptey - however not all of them!!!

Definitely, it’s a process that will take years.

City signed the likes of Jo and Santa Cruz first, climb the table, win a domestic cup etc and then they will be able to shop in a different market.

This is phase 1.

birmingham and leeds are much bigger cities than newcastle and much closer to london, liverpool is similar, but also close to manchester.

all 3 would be classed as much bigger draws for footballers

(not for me, i'd love to live up that way, the northumberland coast is probably the best england has to offer, and scotland's on your doorstep!)

I don't think most footballers, certainly footballers who had never lived in England before, would have strong enough feelings about any of those cities for it to have even the slightest effect on a decision that was ultimately about career and financial matters.

Even pre-takeover I don't think you could claim Newcastle suffered relative to Leeds United or Aston Villa in that regard.

Newcastle is a great place, a fun city. If the wages are right I don't see location being a problem

I like Newcastle. I think it’s a smashing place having stayed there a few times. I’ve only been through the north east itself a few times and it’s fantastic countryside. I hope to explore it more in the future.

However, it isn’t somewhere I’d want to live. It’s too far from all I know and would want to know.

so were Newcastle for a bit.

I just think it's hard to imagine that Allan Saint-Maximin, growing up in an outer suburb of Paris, had many pre-conceived notion of what English cities were like, just like I couldn't tell you whether Nantes, Montpellier or Toulouse are nice places to live.

I can guarantee you that I'd live well in any of them on a £83k-a-week, 6-year contract though.

The Premier League's finances are very robust at the moment, so a wise recruiter would do most of their recruiting in Serie A, Ligue Un and above all La Liga.

Pay the money and they will come, I know we are in London but how else would numerous champions league and a World Cup winner (Cesar) come to a small club like QPR unless stupid wages were thrown there way?
