Paterson’s claim:Â Paterson said the “manner” of the standards commissioner’s pursuit of the inquiry played a major role in driving his wife, Rose, to take her own life last summer at the age of 63. Watchdog response:Â While this was his belief, the committee called it an “unsubstantiated, serious and personal” allegation against the integrity of the commissioner and her team, who were unable to respond publicly.

Chris Bryant spends some time on this in his speech. Clearly a man who has been personally affected by the same issue. I guess that if you have no shame over the corruption in the first place - he is STILL claiming a £9K per month salary from the company involved - you are not going to be ashamed to blame the committee for your wife's suicide.

I wonder whether he stops to think whether it may have been his own despicable behavior that affected his wife's state of mind. The tories always (eventually) shoot themselves in the foot and have done so again today. Labour, SNP and LDs to boycott the new committee. Expect a traditional Johnson u-turn ...

Chris Bryant carefully and sensitively suggested that he ought to be by saying he is bound to be asking those type of questions. His continual denial of wrong doing and insistence on continuing suggest he might not do.

Rules are for the little people on 18:25 - Nov 3 by footers | They're basically the Tories but offer a few more sops to appear 'progressive'. They also have no policies which is a bit of a disadvantage for a political party when asking people to vote for them. Good to see the Greens polling well though. |
They most definitely aren’t the Tories. All else applies though. Assuming they are still going that is. I can’t say I’ve noticed them lately. They either don’t put the effort into being in the public eye or the media just refuse to interview them.

Labour post-local elections seem to have the opposite problem. There have been quite a lot of progressive policy announcements (ban zero hour contracts, right to flexible work, banning conversion therapy) but they seem to be in reaction to what the Tories are doing and aren’t followed up and communicated enough after. The Greens are a wasted vote who can’t win anywhere outside of Brighton and maybe Bristol at a push. As the environment issue becomes more pressing they will likely do well in 2023, but they always poll much better mid-term because around half of their support tends to vote tactically for Labour or the Liberal Democrats.

Interesting they go with “MPs” as a generic term, when it was only Tory members (and 1 from the DUP) who supported the amendment. No doubt will only increase the “they’re all the same” disillusionment that allows the Tories to get away with breaking the rules.

Yep, they've been very careful with their choice of wording there. Imply that all MPs are corrupt and try to neuter the corruption attack line that could be used by opposition parties against the Tories.

As did Paterson. Did you miss the bit in Bryant's speech when he said, ".. this is when we heard his appeal; in writing and in person"?

Not absurd. Boris was being investigated so they went big over Patterson so that the rules could be changed to put everything he has done outside the remit of the Parliamentary Standards Commissioner. In other news Old Etonian Tory Kwasi Karteng is calling for the Parliamentary Standards Commissioner to resign.

Patterson wants everyone to go - the commissioner, the MPs and lay members of that committee, cos they all clearly had in for him and/or incompetent. Just pathetic. and so entitled too.

I genuinely don't get the point of all this. WHY do something obviously stupid, spiteful and/or corrupt only to walk it back within hours, if not days? They can't be THAT stupid that they genuinely don't think that stuff like this will be genuinely good ideas or isn't blatantly transparently dodgy, can they?

My guess is that the Tories are drunk on the power provided by their majority and the Brexit 'win', so feel untouchable. This whole thing has been very revealing - I hope the right people are watching.
