For me Mariner undoubtedly, I worshipped him and also Graham Gooch. I also loved Daley Thompson and remember being thrilled a couple of time seeing him at PR not that far from me in the Pioneer.
No idea when I began here, was a very long time ago. Previously known as Spirit_of_81. Love cheese, hate the colour of it, this is why it requires some blue in it.
Glenn Hoddle. A Rolls Royce of a midfielder, much like I was back then
In terms of us, I really liked Burley. Often gets overlooked, but he had hell of an engine. I think he stands out because he was the nearest player to me, as we always stood on the PR side of the goal in Churchmans, so got a close view of him tearing up and down the line (funnily enough, I can only remember/picture us attacking towards the north stand).

Viv Richards and Daley Thompson.
Viv Richards is a great shout actually, in fact that West Indian team as a whole were all great heroes. Rewatched Fire In Babylon recently which brings it all back, great fil f you love cricket and haven't seen it.

Kevin Beattie, not just as our finest but spent an afternoon with him when I was about 9 or 10. He opened a dog show, and afterwards we spent an hour or two chatting and walking his dog. A very special man and an absolute hero.

Viv Richards was of course an all-time great. However, as a Somerset member I have to say that he is nowhere near as popular as another great WI player for us - Joel Garner.

Gordon Greenidge oozed class, as did Malcolm Marshall.
Richards had an arrogance and ego that, IMO, made him less of a "hero" than those two. Outrageously talented, of course.

George Best was my first ever sporting hero as a 7 year old N Irish kid, but also loved Pat Jennings, Phil Bennett, Allan Hunter, Paul Mariner obviously, Ian Botham and Seve. Stopped having heroes once I left school, but Seve remained my favourite sportsman.

Barry Mcguigan. I loved watching him fight. Paul Mariner. If you were a kid in the 70s you wanted to be Mariner when playing footy in the park. Alex Higgins. Made snooker exciting.
