The Omicron Variant 18:22 - Nov 26 with 7756 viewsgordon

Definitely doesn't sound anything like an apocalyptic disaster movie, so maybe things will be fine.

What I find particularly staggering is that 61 people on a flight from SA tested positive for Covid on arrival in Amsterdam. 61 people. Clearly either people aren't testing before travelling or the tests aren't working, either way the ease with which Covid is being spread through international travel is a farce.

Or they are presenting fake certificates, seen an uptake in amount of fake Dutch vaccine certificates in the last week including a few sites claiming they can fake the Dutch QR code that shows you’ve been vaccinated.

I thought that to be odd too.

They do say it’s a quick spreader, so maybe only one had it when they boarded 🤷🏽‍♂️

It is worth remembering that the case in Belgium first showed signs of Covid on 22nd November but returned from Egypt 11 days earlier.

No real evidence of when and where he was infected.

Did see a Tweet yesterday from an epidemiologist that if you're a country with a high infection rate, it's far more likely for Omicron to take hold and spread like wildfire if it gets in.

*Looks at yesterday's UK data*

Ah.

Thank goodness it was the Netherlands.......oh!

Passengers travelling from Cape Town to Manchester via Amsterdam told the BBC that they were held on the tarmac at Schiphol Airport in the Dutch capital for four hours, before eventually disembarking.

Presumably just to make sure the virus had time to infect everyone on board.

They should've called it the kitten toes variant.

Kitten is not very apt for a variant of African origin though. Perhaps camel?

Indeed. About 4 times positivity rate of Delta.

Mask wearing should never have been relaxed in the first place so that's good news at least.

They have only asked people to be more vigilant with mask wearing in shops and on transport.

What amazed me about today’s press conference is the fact that they couldn’t even manage to get the slides right. How much did they spend on the new press room.

To be honest Boris was so poor at delivering his speech I wasn't entirely sure what he was trying to say.

Edit: He's clarified it now - people will have to wear masks in shops and on public transport - it's not a "request"

Interestingly, Omicron produces a strange result in PCR tests which means they can track it without having to do the full genetic analysis they usually have to do.

Self isolation until negative PCR is a good idea. No way of really policing it though as travel is properly back.

Not sure what the waffle about masks in shops and transport was about. Just make them compulsory.

I know that was then, but it could be again..

I heard if you take a picture in front a testing centre then you're golden vis a vis this covid malarkey, not sure about a lamb bhuna though.
