Is there a chance a Cup run could fire up our season.... 11:14 - Nov 30 with 3194 views | itfcjoe | ....whilst I don't think we look great - I don't think things are a million miles away from clicking but we need some momentum and results this side of Christmas for Cook to have any hope in seeing that job through. But does a good cup run alongside improved league form save the season somewhat? We've got the squad to win the Papa Johns Trophy, and should be aiming to do so, it is a tinpot competition but I'd much rather win it, with all it entails at Wembley etc than not win it. And we are plenty good enough to beat Barrow, and then take it one game at a time from there to try and get a decent run behind us. The fans are on the verge of turning, you can feel it in the air at the ground, and when you speak to people after the last couple of games - we need to win some games whatever competition it is in to get people excited again - starting tomorrow.

I do definitely think the Full backs are hindering him though. Not exactly the attacking full backs he desires, need to get some games in to KVY, need Coulson to be back. I think that might get our season going, or I hope so anyway.

I think that pinning hope on combinations, some of which are barely trialled (and I include Coulson in that) is not promising, given how it's unfolded thus far. Cook himself says as much when playing the "I'm not telling you who's in or our game." Yet he also says , and he's not alone in such managerial retorts, that systems don't matter, meanwhile sticking to one, and refusing to countenance another. The visual evidence is of periodic cut and thrust too soon followed by having nowhere to go as the opposition work it all out. Whatever, he needs to get them playing as fearlessly for him as he once claimed they would. If not, while previous regimes would give him the season (and beyond) this one seems to me far less likely to do that.

three other things on 19:26 - Nov 30 with 617 views | unstableblue | I agree we are close to clicking into gear, and building a run of decent Wycombe like performances, but it needs to happen before Christmas as you say... we need confidence and critically a confident in form striker I think Cook is on the same page as you in that he sees the cup games as a vehicle to build confidence - my worry is the different team in the pizza cup, but El Miz, Piggot et al need to show desire to push the A team Fans on the verge of turning is the BIG concern, seasons and club fortunes can pivot on such things, we could be on the verge of an inflection point, but a muted away support at charlton or a negative reaction at the big Sunderland game and we could fall apart... time for the players to run towards adversity As much as we all slate cook, too many of this team have not turned up in games... I think cooks tactics and shape should reduce the impact of that.. but it’s a big factor [Post edited 30 Nov 2021 20:06]

We lose two in fifteen and the consensus is we’re becoming difficult to beat and we’re getting some momentum up. We have two bad back-to-back performances and now Cook isn’t working and the fans are on the cusp of turning. Either way, it’s 4 defeats in 18 and 9 wins in that time which gives Cook a 50% win record since middle of September, Bolton. The patient fan moniker has long worn off, it would seem.

We were nowhere in the league, playing catch up, and had a run of 6-8 tough games which were going to show where we are - and so far we are failing to show we are anything but a mid table side in those games. The next 3 games are a huge test, simply if we don't win 2 of them then we are going nowhere - I'm sure Cook knows that more than anyone

We haven't won 9 league games all season. Your including of pizza cup and facup against a team in a relegation from the efl position is clutching at straws.

I never said league wins. A win is a win no matter what tournament it’s in. It dictates a manager’s win %. No straw clutching fella, those are the results, which are facts.

Where did the 6 - 8 start? Portsmouth? Plymouth? Either way it’s better than Lambert did against any side above us, just to put another dent in the “Lambert is better than Cook” nonsense flying around. Agree we need to pick up a few points off a fewer of the bigger boys in the next few games and December is going to be a big month. If you apply Cook’s record since Bolton across the remaining league games, it nets 72 pts. I think that’s about 5 pts off what I’d have expected after our slow start. I want to hit that 2 ppg mark again which means we need an upturn for sure and, in my opinion, when the fine tuning is complete, we’ll go on a run.

The Plymouth game through to the Sunderland game is the tough run - 9 games against most of the top teams in the league. So far it's 7 points from 6 games (and 4 from 5 against the better teams in it). A very real chance that it ends up sometihng like 10 points from the 9 games. Lambert was a terrible Ipswich manager, that there is even a discussion as to who is better is very damning on Cook - if Cook were to get the boot tomorrow I can't see that he could have any real complaints. I think there may be an issue this season which sees the points required for 6th being a bit higher than normal - but until we can string some wins together we can't even look at them yet - come January 1st if we have been able to pick up 12 points from the 6 games (including the Lincoln one) then there can be a belief things have turned - that's a long way off though and it's important we use the cups to get the momentum started
