Anyone got one?

Water around here is horrendous as most know so thinking of getting a water softener installed but probably only rent one.

Anyone have any experiences with them?

Have got a second hand one you're welcome to if you want it?

I took it out of the place I just moved in to purely because I need the extra cupboard room and I didn't like the fact I couldn't drink the water from majority of the taps in the house

I think that’s one thing people forget. The water isn’t ‘safe’ to drink

You get a separate unsoftened water tap for drinking.

It isn't that the softened water is "unsafe" to drink, but rather there is a heightened risk of heart disease associated with salt in the diet so it is best not to increase your sodium intake by drinking the softened water. If you use the softened water in a kettle it will prevent the scale but you then drink the sodium ions.

We have always had one around these parts. Have to remember to refill the salt but it lasts a good while.

Have recently had a combi condensing boiler fitted. The fitters fitted upstream of the [edit] softener but that means the hot water is now hard. They are coming back to change the fitting. I am adamant the central heating should be upstream but the hot water should be downstream of it. They are not convinced but what I find online supports my position.

Appreciate you get a separate drinking tap.

I think some just assume you get soft water and there are no other considerations and yes my ‘unsafe’ comment was the point you have raised. They don’t advise drinking it.

Very hard water here in Kent, something to do with all the chalk! We had a water softener installed in our new house, built in 1993, it was (IIRC) a Kinetico, used salt tablets and worked on a timer for overnight recycling of the cleansing cylinder. Changed about 7 years ago to a TwinTec, uses "bricks" of salt and recycles when needed, no electricity needed. The salt cost is a few pence per day.

I'm certain that we use far less soap, detergent etc which is better for the planet as well as for my pocket.

We had the same issue. We purchased a virgin pure machine and was able to do away with the kettle as well. Really impressed with it. Though drinking tap water anywhere else is now vomit inducing. Difference is horrible

Had one for 12 years. Well worth it. Haven't got a separate tap as plumber fixed a diversion gadget so water from kitchen tap is drinkable but hard which means descaling the kettle every so often. Not a great hardship. Most importantly the bathroom is very much easier to keep clean. Use less soap, detergents and bath/shower cleaning sprays.

Downside is 'losing' a kitchen cupboard as they need to be installed near to the incoming mains supply. Recently had ours moved outside and it resides under a special cabinet. Obviously, 25kg bags of salt are heavy to move from car boot to storage area!

The most common means for removing water hardness rely on ion-exchange resin or reverse osmosis. Other approaches include precipitation methods and sequestration by the addition of chelating agents.

Isn't it harder to get dry after a bath/shower too? I was working in Stockport years ago, felt like trying to dry an oily film off your body after a bath! Maybe I'm just so used to our hard stuff round here! Citric acid boil for the kettle every month to keep it clean, and dry off the bath sealant. Hard work this hard water!

Didn’t know that, but I don’t drink tap water anyway apart from the odd cup of tea. You have to get a separate tap installed?
