“Possibly successful times” 11:08 - Dec 3 with 1107 viewschicoazul

Pardon? Errrrrr…..what? What’s possibly successful about what the club did when McGreal was here?

In the spirit of reconciliation and happiness at the end of the Banter Era (RIP) and as a result of promotion I have cleared out my ignore list. Look forwards to reading your posts!

I think it's the word 'possibly' that Chico is questioning. I found that rather eyebrow-raising too.

He said it's generally good to have ex players who have 'possibly' experienced successful times. I don't think he's debating whether JMc specifically was successful here.

Are we at the stage where we micro analyse every word the manager says now? Joy.

Because we had great success and then crushing failure that put us back years?

As an overall take, I think there’s room for a little nuance and qualification.

That makes more sense. Yeah, nothing to see here.

No he didn’t. He said “possibly successful times”. Those were successful times.
I don’t enjoy parsing managerial statements either but that’s a stand out weird one.

But if he’s talking about ex players in general then players like Dyer, Roberts and Jeffers didn’t really experience successful times.

McGreal and Butcher before him did. But if he likes ex-players in general then he needs to qualify “successful times” as not the be all and end all of their involvement.

It's really not.

'I think it’s always good when clubs have former employees in the ranks. I think especially from possibly successful times and that feel-good factor.'

McGreal isn't mentioned in that comment. He could be referring to the likes of Roberts and/or Jeffers, Dyer etc.

Odd that you're making a thing of it.

Didn't stop him getting rid of butcher. Who enjoyed more success than anyone.

What's your point?

Unless I'm mistaken, I don't think Cook has said previous success as a player is the only thing he looks for when recruiting new staff.

I am lusting after a chili-infused cheese toastie. In fact, I can barely think of anything else!

How about you?

I know all managers to an extent talk in a slightly cryptic and/or evasive way but he has a very odd style of answering questions. His whole answer re: McGreal was a bit bizarre and non-committal.

Just because I don't care doesn't mean I don't understand.

Funnily enough I had a cheese and onion toasted sandwich for lunch yesterday.

Dunno about now, looking for inspiration but might go with that again.

Spicy food for dinner later so should probably keep lunch a bit plain and omit any ideas of chili myself.

Not as a manager. He was hopeless.

I’d be interested to know the full story with Butcher and the club last season/this, but I guess that’s between them. McGreal was here for five years from 1999 so saw PL and championship days under GB and Royle. He lives in the area and hopefully will be an asset to the club. If Cook goes, would I have him as manager? Possibly, but I suspect the owners will want somebody higher profile.
