Pick your 11 for the Gabba 17:49 - Dec 5 with 1412 viewsYallop

Rory Burns,
Zak Crawley,
Dawid Malan,
Joe Root,
Ollie Pope,
Ben Stokes,
Jos Buttler,
Jack Leach
Ollie Robinson
James Anderson,
Stuart Broad

I'm uncomfortable leaving Woakes out but I'd play a spinner at the Gabba.

Yep about that although wouldn’t mind finding a place for wood rather than broad or Anderson. Still love both but think only one at a time especially in Australia is best plus would like to see us go in with some genuine pace. Overall think we’ll be destroyed whoever we play though.
Actually is hameed out there as well?

Hameed instead of Crawley, and swap Stokes and Pope in the order.

Yeah Hameed is there. Ideally get him and Crawley in but Malan has that bit more experience

Think it’s got be either malan or Crawley at three, the latter isn’t an opener

Decent technique Crawley though. It's great to see Hameed getting back to his early promise. I just wish he'd had this form for another series or two to really cement his confidence

It will be:

Burns
Hameed
Malan
Root
Stokes
Bairstow
Buttler
Broad
Wood
Anderson
Leach.

Pope unlucky there but not done enough to cement a play, a bit like Ian Bell in his first 5 years, lots of pretty 20's and 30's but not enough consistency and big scores. They will go with JB's experience at the start of a massive series.

No Robinson?

He has done well but we got Stokes back to balance the side which means we play a spinner instead of OR.

No point saving Broad or Anderson, this is their last tour, so play your best 11 and then go from there with the rest and rotation.

Woakes instead of Broad.
Hamid instead of Crawley. Crawley has two huge technical flaws which he is either incapable or too arrogant to sort out.

Stokes at 3! Too high for me. Get a specialist in there and save Stokes till the ball is a bit softer.

I'd like to see Wood in, but am I right in thinking it's been very wet and conditions could be a bit more 'English'

Such a shame that a year ago we had 3 real speed merchants and we're down to just Wood.

Edit: In case anybody missed it, another plug for 'project Ashes', Aggers' podcast on BBC Sounds about the build up over the last year and the plans.

Is it real out and out pace that'll make the difference out there? Line and length crucial

Wood has to play if fit. Genuine pace needed down under. We have seen Jimmy and Broad struggle too many times down under and I don't think the aussie openers will have too much fear seeing them open the boing.

With no other serious pace in the attack Wood is essential for me.

I also think we lose this 3 or 4 nil. Had Archer been fit to add to the genuine pace options I'd fancy us more.

I agree that we will lose this 3 or 4 nil.

However out and out pace only works in Australia if coupled with decent accuracy and control. Their batsmen are used to quick bouncy wickets and they are quite happy with quick but loose bowlers.
Hazelwood, McGrath, Alderman, Gillespie, McDermott and the later Lillie were quick rather than express, but all had good control.

Always amazes me that we go into ashes series pondering the need for pace. England need to score big. The bowling will find a way if we can regularly post 400.... the 2010/11 win was built on massive batting efforts.

Woakes has to play. He always seems to be an 'easy' option to drop, yet every time he is recalled he proves his worth. His bating alone is almost worth a place compared to his colleagues.

Really quite apprehensive about this Ashes series. I'm hoping it's one of those where you expect the worst and we do a lot better than anticipated.....not holding my breath though!

"but am I right in thinking it's been very wet and conditions could be a bit more 'English'"

Th TMS preview of the series with Steve Finn on (I think) Saturday eve, R5l, did say that weather at 'the Gabbatoir' had been unseasonably wet & cool, so more like English conditions, yes.

Finn was a great contributor btw, I hope it's him that replaces Vaughan.

Just my opinion Melford, but I don't think we can play Robinson, Anderson and Broad in the same team away from English conditions, all too similar bowlers. We need Wood in there to offer something a little different with his pace. Although, with his injury record I can't see him lasting a whole 5 match series.

Yes, but we had a bloody good side during that series with players coming into their prime. Our bowling unit then was terrific, it had a bit of everything and Chris Tremlett was a revelation with his height and bounce, the Aussies couldn't cope with it.

Spot on. And the problem is, only one of current top 6 is a truly top-class Test batsman.
Archer is the only really express bowler with enough control to consistently trouble batsmen raised on quick bouncy wickets. He also has a very nasty bouncer, which appears to come from nowhere.

Quite.

Root and Stokes aside (and Root thus far hasn't exactly taken to aussie conditions) I don't see the quality in our batting line up to take us near 400 let alone past it.

The bowling unit is full of quality but not so much for the conditions.

It's all v well having been wet but will there be cloud cover? If not I don't see what help the conditions will bring? Also (could be wrong on this) but don't they use the kookaburra ball in Aus which reacts a bit differently anyway.

Hope I'm wrong but with a batting line up lacking class in the top order and a bowling unit unsuited for aussie tacks I just can't see England getting a foothold in the series
