Ashton just as culpable for this mess... 21:46 - Dec 7 with 2754 viewsITFCBlues

And shouldn't get away with deflecting blame by talking rubbish.

He allowed Cook to bring in his own players and a completely new squad and to sack him 4 months later is completely unacceptable. We now find ourselves with a core of players that signed to play for Cook on big wages and long term deals who quite frankly didn't look at all interested tonight. God knows if they'll fit into the new managers system as well.

Not to mention, the players that clearly he and Mike O'Leary have signed, poor. Edwards is awful, headless chicken, Harper no where to be seen & Barry? Any others I've mentioned?

The seasons already over and it's only the start of December. What an absolute mess.

Still surprises me that there is so little on here questioning Ashton.

For all the talks of a plan and having things in place, there really doesn't appear to be any evidence that this is actually the case.

How many of these signings are Ashton helping his mates out?

Complete shambles and wreckage that's now left with a load of disinterested players.

Can't disagree with this.

Every single thing that Cook did would have been signed off on by Ashton and, as the OP states, there is no doubt in my mind that certain purchase/hiring decisions were made by Ashton and not by Cook.

He is just as culpable in my mind, and should naff off elsewhere with his overinflated ego and cut-price David Brent schtick.

You dont think unrealistic 'supporters' are to blame?

There was much enthusiasm on here for the club becoming a franchise under some pretend owners in Arizona who between them owned as much of the club as Evans - or a bit less as they were excluded from the property deal.

There was a great deal of enthusiasm for Cook despite all the evidence he was seen to be completely useless derailing last season

There was a great deal of enthusiasm for the utter idiocy of getting rid of the entire staff (apart from some of Hurst's odds and sods) and bringing in a raft of mercenaries - none of whom seemed too inspirational

There was a lot of enthsiasm for a 'reboot' - even though one happened under Hurst with predictably disasgrous consequences.

There was a lot of enthusiasm for Ashton - even though he is a laughable opportunist ic poodle for O'Leary

And that's after driving out MM, praising the sell out to Evans, worshipping Burley...

This eulogising of every self-destructive step on the long and winding decline - and having delusions of grandeur are really what is to blame.

We were all happy with our signings - most of us predicting we'll get promoted with these players - Ashton has done his job, it's the manger's job to get the best out of them.

Edwards and Harper both have Championship promotions on their CV's so can't have always been as bad as they've shown here!

You tell us which of these are Ashton’s signings. He explained how and why the recruitment was done. If you are saying he lied, call him out and let us know his response. Alternatively to the next forum and ask him why he lied to our faces.I think we need to know.

We were warned about him. Don't see what was so fantastic in his cv that meant us chasing him so hard.

In your OP you said Ashton is responsible because he's let Cook sign his own players then sacked him after 4 months, now you're saying Ashton signed the players to help out his mates. Which is it?

Prompted by Bristol trolls it seems folks here are dying to get stuck in to Ashton.

Apparently he shouldn't have signed all the players that these same fans were jizzing themselves over in the summer.

An article from Stuart Watson back in April. Generally accepted that Stuart is a fair journalist and simply provides the history prior to joining Town.

Watford fans are just as vociferous as Bristol City Supporters in their dislike of Ashton.

Even a few comments on the net relating to Ashton's 4 months at Wycombe.

Warned by the Bristol amoebas. Well, if they say so from their lofty perch of a new ground, new facilities and Championship football, it must be true, by that logic, Ashton clearly stopped them fulfilling their destiny of Premier League. They were PL in waiting, according to the single digit IQ brigade on their forum. And their views differ from that of the local media.

Ashton had met the owners a few years ago. He knew O’Leary, who negotiated the deal. It was a logical appointment. People work with people. Often with people they know. They may not be the best but it is how it is. It made me laugh at the bleating around Cook appointing his mates. Of course he did! You bring in people you can work with. It’s the same the world over.

The overall problem is we are in a downward spiral, and it is very difficult to reverse. The negativity is never far away, and at first opportunity, it jumps back in to drag us back down again.

The truth of the matter is, like Lambert said, and Cook said, is we need to be in this together.

Until people get that, and really understand that, we are going nowhere fast, unless we can pluck out this superstar manager that is going to turn us into a Top team immediately.

We had that 5-6 weeks ago, Wycombe away, we beat Pompey away, we bossed Sunderland away, but that was not enough progress for some.

The best time to be a Town fans in years etc, etc.

I was surprised Ashton gave Cook free reign to replace every player but it's quite bizarre to think that sacking a manager performing incredibly badly reflects badly on Ashton and the board.

Last night does nothing but underline how badly Cook had failed. Two goals scored in the last five league games, five in 10 in all competitions.

Keep blaming the fans for the manager's inability to get the team performing, it's a really good look on you.

Think there’s now a few beginning to question Ashton after what has happened over the last few days. The fact MA has shown a bit of passion, speaks well and has got a lot of players in he’s been generally seen as a force of good for the club, now we’ve hit a rocky spell on the pitch he’s being challenged. This next managerial appointment could be one of our most important for the last decade, if not longer. It’s crucial he gets this right.

The last half dozen managerial appointments have been the most important for decades.

I thought he was very clear in his interview he said 3 or 4 times "the board" "unanimously" decideded to sack Paul Cook, seemed like he was definitely trying to distance himself from that decision whether he agreed with it or not.

McGreal set them up no differently to how Cook would have done last night. That was the worst performance of the past month but it hasn't been working for weeks. We don't look a functional side at all. At the start of the season we looked a decent side that needed a couple of tweaks defensively, but we look miles off that currently.

It's well and good people chucking mud at everybody connected to the club but for last night people should be looking no further than the players as that performance was an utter disgrace. It was gutless, spineless and pathetic. As I saw someone else say 'if you are second to every ball, it doesn't matter what formation or tactics you are playing'.

It's not about immediate progress, but having some progress and some semblance of organisation. We didn't get that from Cook, we had six weeks of being moderately decent and had then regressed again.

That's his fault not the fans however much you want to keep blaming them.

Clearly a bit of both isn't it? Half the squad is Cook signings and Ashton clearly has his stamp on some others, see Edwards, Harper and probably Barry.

Well here is an article to read on how Media influences people:

https://www.shoutoutuk.org/2014/10/01/medias-influence-society/

But there are many many other examples of such.

It describes how Media influences people. In the olden days, this used to be Tv and Newspapers, but now we have Social Media, and Internet Forums.

I don't really understand why you don't get this point. What people write on the internet, has an effect. This really is not a new, or controversial view.

I want us to get back to Wycombe away, that joined up connection between players and fans.

I am just not quite sure how we have gone from that, to last night in just 5-6 weeks.

We are going to need to get behind a manager, and stick with them, through thick and thin, it is not going to be an easy ride.

Mass media, sure. A handful of "keyboard warriors" expressing an opinion on a provincial third division football club messageboard mucg less so.

Cook was given great backing by the fans. It's only the last couple of home games where there's been a few boos and that is understandable after 9 months of chronic underperformance. Stop blaming the fans.
