Does anyone else find shocking the number of basics we do wrong? 08:25 - Dec 8 with 348 viewsitfcserbia

Last night showcased just how bad in football basics this team is.

Just one example - Walton takes a goal kick. Three players come to him - Edmundson and Nsiala in the line with goal, Morsy/Evans to the edge of our box. Charlton goes into front three man coverage. Walton kicks the ball out into their half - without anyone moving the players forwards or into any kind of shape. And this is a goal kick mind you - you have all the time you need to position and shape around the ball placement. Midfielders, centre backs, captain, goalkeeper - none of them were trying to correct this. This is something you don't see even with U12s. And so many times over 90 minutes. Shocking.

And this is just the simplest example, far from being only one.

Semper fidelis!
Poll: Would you sack Paul Cook?

Agree fully. Happened a few times.

We were outmuscled and out-pressed all game and thats one of the worst habits to have crept back in recently.
We play most of our game from our goalkeeper up to the opposing final third and then back again. Either by choice or because possession lost straight away and we are back on back foot.

If a team presses us hard we panic and the midfield is gone.

Our own pressing isn't organised often enough and has relied on the willingness of Bonne to chase now mainly on his own. Never going to make a high pressing game that way.
Basics review and picking a way of playing / formation / shape has been missing since Mick. And not saying his was pretty. But for a lot of his tenure team was at least drilled.

All of that plus making it so more than 2 corners in 50 or 1 free kick in 25 actually causes the opposition some trouble.

Yep pretty spot on, you've got to be damn good to be able to confidently play out all the time from the back(which we don't but we are set up to do that)and when we're pressed we either get caught out or we panic and go long - an aimless ball to nobody and the ball is given away and we're still in our own half.

Like you say our other method is for Walton to just simply go direct when the short ball or width isn't on, so he fires it up to Bonne on his own and were just hoping someone picks up the second ball, he then quickly needs support but often he's just outnumbered..
