If you were a football manager 09:52 - Dec 9 with 1167 viewsclive_baker

What would be attractive in a club?

I quite like 1 club towns. Not sure why, but there's something cool about the whole town supporting the same side.

Area would be high on my list. Opportunity to live in a nice part of the country, perhaps coastal or failing that some nice countryside / market town.

Not too bothered about history particularly, but a decent fan base is important and the 2 often go hand in hand.

I wouldn't want too big a club where the role was too limited just to the football, I would quite enjoy getting slightly into the commercial elements and community stuff. Wouldn't fancy a Newcastle type gig for example.

I think Exeter City would be up there, maybe Plymouth. Swindon Town. Oxford maybe, although a little twee for me, more so than Exeter. Contrary to my first point Bristol Rovers, I worked for them coaching for a bit, love that club.

Where are you sending your CV and why?

Joking aside of course, I think I'd look to go abroad. Eerste Divisie in The Netherlands or maybe the 2/3.Bundesliga in Germany.

Job security, which rules a sleepy little Suffolk club out.

Union St Gilles. They’re my local club (when in Belgium), community focussed, run by a couple of Brits, considered small but historically a ‘big club’, currently top of the Belgian league so could lead them into the champions league, got an old school ground.

They’re basically pretty cool.

Owned by the chap who also owns Brighton aren't they? A few English players there now as well.

I wouldn't want to be at an outpost like those you've suggested in South West - just so much travelling to do anything. Realistically same could be said here.

Swindon?

I hate Swindon, and it's a sh1t hole, I'm not really sure why I suggested them! 1 club town though, decent stadium, get to live in Wiltshere, ex Premier League.

I was just thinking South West really. Should probably broaden my search area.

Lincoln?

York City! Nailed it.

Perfect for some pub crawl bus trips home. I'll be like a throw back, sh1thousing wins on a Saturday afternoon with my crazy gang esque squad, and getting the pints in on the way home.

Pre season tour of Guernsey will be like a stag do.

I've always quite fancied winning the Scottish league with Hearts or Aberdeen.
Doing that with a club other than Rangers or Celtic is about the only achievement left in the Scottish League.

I'd like one that's by the seaside. Or mountains.

That's about it really.

Helsingborgs.

Meets all of your criteria, plus you'd have a serious chance of getting them into Europe, which is fun.

A huge wodge of cash. A barrow load.

Seriously, the largest single town/club I could find south of the Wash and east of Birmingham. I like Newcastle as a place, but it’s the a–e end of nowhere. Sunderland, the same but the town is a hole too. That leaves Leicester, Brighton, Southampton and ok, not in their league, Portsmouth, Ipswich. On the margins, Derbyshire is lovely so DCFC would do and I like Leeds the city and the dales so I’d consent to manage them for 45 days.

Yeah exactly - was a decent write up a couple of weeks ago about them, and they beat us at PR in a friendly a couple of years back.

It's not the same question, but I don't think a city is a proper city until it's got two clubs. For all that Malmö matches Gothenburg culturally in almost every other way, it feels kind of lame that everyone is cheering on the same team. The best thing about Bercelona is Espanol.
