I've tried to look at that season in hindsight, because it was such an improvement on the year before. I guess the signings of Goddard and Whitton were key but I'd suggest a bit of luck with injuries (the only one i recall really is the Linighan one for the run in) meant we kept a pretty stable 11. It seems everything came together and I guess that rolled on for the first half of the season after.

Zondervan and Goddard missed a large part of that season.

But they were good at it. Nothing wrong with a well executed plan!

Lyalls team played great football,he had a track record for it. Not sure where Harris fits with that.

John Lyalls team didn't play sexy football from the back through midfield at all. They simply didn't have the defenders with the technical ability to do it.

Linighan was very limited with the ball at feet but did possess a good long range diagonal pass to Whitton who used to win 80% of everthing. We then played all our better football in midfield/attack with Doz & Kiwomya with Goddard who were very clever footballers.

Even our central midfield wasn't that gifted. Milton was an excellent runner into the box and Steve Palmer was very limited but always 100% effort.

I'd be amazed if Warky & Linighan played 10% of the passes between them that our back 4 have this season.

Paul cook p38 w11 John lyall p38 w11

Lyall would never get to see his promotion nowadays

Then, we were a mid table championship team whereas now we are a mid table L1 team. Totally different scenario to Cook’s failure.

Cant see too many similarities GB, apart from style of play (apparently)

Lyall was an experienced manager with a good reputation, having a managed in the top league, taking one last job.

Harris is relatively inexperienced, with an OK reputation, no experience at top level and looking to get back on the ladder.

Loyal got the best out of a relatively average squad. Harris will get an above average squad for this league.

Poll: Right now, who would you rather have as Prime Minister?

Having watched quite a few highlights from that season recently, the football was decent. Yes, there were many diagonal passes (I recall them mainly coming from Thompson), but then when it was in the final third we really got the ball down and played some slick passing stuff. Nothing like the dross we've seen for most of the past ten years.

Whitton was one of our best players Goddard less so. Dozzell and Kiwomya were up front during the best periods. That team is the greatest example of the essence of Ipswich Town; a core of youth players and cheap buys with a sprinkling of inspired experienced signings, of course helped by the greatest player in our history. A team worth so much more than the sum of its parts and playing the big boys off the park. Such a shame it’s all gone now.

Can't be bothered to look it up but my memories were Marshall and Kiwomya up top ..

Served JL in JJB once, his grandson wanted Predators but JL wanted nothing but the cheapest possible pair of boots. Good lesson for the young man

Marshall was a few years later.

In the spirit of reconciliation and happiness at the end of the Banter Era (RIP) and as a result of promotion I have cleared out my ignore list. Look forwards to reading your posts!

Aah right, the memories are just disappearing into the ether amid the last 20 years of mediocrity.

John Lyall... who was one of West Ham's best ever managers, who won the FA Cup twice, reached the Cup Winners Cup final, reached the League Cup Final as well as storming what is now the Championship with West Ham. Lyall was an exceptional club manager and a great appointment for Ipswich to make.

Yes, that's a like for like comparison with Harris...

Think the OP meant in terms of how people felt about the appointment (not the big exciting name etc..) rather than directly comparing Harris and Lyall's careers etc...

I don't remember people being against John Lyall at the time.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.
