I’d be surprised if he joined the coaching staff. I remember reading an article when OGS was sacked from United saying how Phelan didn’t want to be involved with the coaching side of things for the r last couple of seasons and wanted a ‘Technical Director’ role based more around recruitment, but United wouldn’t let that happen and OGS didn’t want to lose him so kept him on assistant, even though he never took sessions or anything.

I’m reading Curbishley’s book about his time at Charlton at the moment (not brilliant, not bad) and I was interested to read about who he sought as his first team coach and why. He viewed it as the most significant appointment to get right and fit with the way he wanted to do things.

If this has merit, I hope McKenna does the same but takes his time over it. It may just be that somebody in the club, like KD for example, is the right fit.

He's got a lovely job at United, gets paid a forttune to not do a lot by all accounts.

I don't know anything about Curbishley's approach but I know Joe Royle used to do very, very little of the coaching/training sessions himself - it was mostly Willie Donachie. If you are more hands off that first team coach is very important.

McKenna is clearly going to be very hands on and leading most sessions I'd have thought, I was surprised his title was manager rather than head coach. You still need a couple of other coaches around you delivering the same consistent message, that's why managers tend to go with people they know and trust. I suspect the new guy expected in the next couple of days will be someone he's worked with before.

I thought Pert was Assistant, too. Gilmartin is goalkeeping coach and I was under the impression this further person was as just another member of the coaching team.

Would be an awesome appointment. Really engaging guy who knows his beans. What a coup if we convince him to join.

That would be a proper coup but seems really likely. Previously worked at Chelsea too.

No idea if it is at all realistic, but if we want someone he has worked with it seems a good fit

Obviously knows McKenna really well and it'll be all change at United over the next 6 months. Would not surprise me at all.

If we ended up with 3 former first team United coaches I am sure there would be several that would still complain though...

Any further whispers yet on the new backroom team,

Was wandering if Erik Ramsey has been mentioned... Set piece specialist coach, 27 and promoted alongside Kieran I think.

All very interesting. I do hope that there will still be a meaningful position within the club for Kieron - as opposed to Kieran.
