How to feel old 16:27 - Dec 21 with 1625 viewsThe_Major

Our new manager was born nine days after the infamous Oxford v Arsenal match that relegated us, and two days before the release of Top Gun.

Rock Me Amadeus was number one.

Think I'll just go and get drunk and cry in the corner.

There are many things that make me feel old. When I first started teaching students born this century was one. When I realised that I was teaching the last of those born last century another. Colleagues starting who I used to teach. I am sure before long it will be teaching the children of those I have taught. So far, moving schools has prevented it but I know it won't be far away.

A while ago a student said in a lesson said "I predict ..." and I added "a riot" and got a blank look. I looked the song up and found it released the year they were born (2004)!

Ah, the 'Tainted Love' Paradox.

When Soft Cell hit the big time with that, World War 2 was only 36 years ago.
And Tainted Love itself is now 40 years old.

On a similar and equally irrelevant note, Gary Oldman is younger than Gary Numan.

Now back to the thread.

The first stage of ageing is when footballers tend to be younger than you.

Second, is when the sons of former players make their debuts.

The third stage is when football managers will start getting younger than you.

The forth is when the grandsons of formers players make their debuts.

The next stage is death.

You people know nothing about being old. I spoke to a man born in 1847.

I was taken to see him on his hundredth birthday. I was three.

Point of Order:

Tainted Love is actually 56 years old....

And he undoubtedly knew people born in the 1700s... just to make you feel really old!

It makes me feel historic! He might have spoken to people alive when Mozart was born.

I have four positions to measure. If all of them are older than me, I know the game is up.

Current ITFC Manager

Current James Bond

Current Doctor Who

Current Prime Minister

As things stand, 007 and the Prime Minister are still older than me. And although they haven't announced Jodie's successor yet, unless it's Michael Sheen or Idris Elba (who have both been mentioned) - it's going to be someone no older than 30.

If Johnson goes, if it goes to Gove, I'm safe. Truss or Sunak, oh dear. And then there's Bond. Obviously Craig has chucked it in, and I can't see them getting someone in older than me for the gig.

Not our first manager younger than me by any stretch, but the first who could actually be my son.

I think it hit me when players who were sons of players I'd watched began to retire.

No idea when I began here, was a very long time ago. Previously known as Spirit_of_81. Love cheese, hate the colour of it, this is why it requires some blue in it.

Even as I was writing it, I knew some smart a!se would say that! And Gloria Jones' is the best :-)

But for a rubbish version with a Suffolk connection check out Dave Philips & The Hot Rod Gang, featuring Great Cornard's legendary Rockabilly guitarist Mark Harman. Ouch.

I naively still felt we had some hope & that 7th placed Arsenal might give Oxford a tough game. Sadly, they turned up in their flip-flops & we never had a chance. The crowning blow was the footage of the appalling Robert Maxwell doing a lap of honour of the pitch after the game.

I often feel jealous that I’m not old enough to have witnessed the great Ipswich teams of the 70s and early 80s. But if I was then I would have seen that as well.
