Anyone used mental health apps like Headspace or Calm? 12:01 - Dec 29 with 3614 viewsJ2BLUE

Are they any good?

For years i've had low level constant anxiety and minor things make me worry and obsess. Finally got sick of being unhappy 24/7 and not being able to picture a good life.

Not really interested in books. I've read countless books on this sort of thing. Other app suggestions welcome. Thank you.

No. Fairly sure it's nothing like that. I think it's just a case of not really managing my thinking properly and dwelling on the wrong things.

I'll keep it in mind though if things don't improve.

Sorry to hear that, J2.

I don't have any experience with apps like that but mother has found certain hypnotherapy tapes very good for her anxiety, just listen while you're going to sleep. The doctor had prescribed her various drugs before but she had adverse side effects so I flushed them down the toilet. The tapes definitely seem to have helped though.

Hope you find something that works for you.

Is this easy to have done?

My whole life I thought something wasn't quite right with me. I then spoke to my mum recently who said she thought I had autism as I was awful when I was younger, but she didn't want me to be treated differently, which I greatly appreciate now, but I'm still left with bouts of anxiety, depression, OCD and often struggling in social settings and quick thinking.

I use Calm and would highly recommend it, especially when there's a lot going on at once or its a particularly stressful time at work, it really helps to use it to take a step back and to control my thoughts and emotions, and also really helps with my sleep.

I'm more of a casual user atm but my but my ex used it every day and it helped her massively with her anxiety and her life in general. Might not be for everyone but even for the amount I use it I'd say its a very reasonable price and worth trying

Work. Not exactly in my dream job but it's a good well paying job and far better than anything I could have hoped for a year ago to be honest. I worry about stupid little things like being on the phone (despite only taking about 5 calls a day).

I worry about all sorts of stupid little things. Work review, even when I know they are looking to promote me. Not all work stuff, just silly little things which make no difference.

I don't know but I mentioned it because I'm waiting for an appointment with a specialist myself. I have always struggled with social situations and used alcohol and stimulants to cope in the past. I am also often completely overwhelmed by what are considered 'easy tasks' by most people. Then recently my mum mentioned that, as a young child, a doctor thought I might be autistic. Being the 60s, it was never followed up and she has never mentioned it until now.

I have been treated for depression all my adult life but now think it's definitely autism, although on a very mild scale.

I feel for you, i've been at the same company since leaving school, man and boy they say.

And this entire time i've had zero interest in what i do, the industry, the people i work with (barring a few) hate it. however, i'm not getting paid what i do here anywhere else, and with all life things that have happened (kids/house etc) means i'm here for the foreseeable.

but what i would say, and what i tell myself every single shift "fck it, its only a job and im here purely for money and to live when not at work"

I use Medito which is a meditation app on Android - I find meditation really helps but often struggle to find the time. I'm also on antidepressants to help and would actually suggest talking to your GP or a charity like MIND as they may be able to offer better help.

You are in Norway aren't you?

I am just wondering how you go about getting assessed in this country and what the benefits are as an adult. As a student, I know schools will refer for assessment and that teachers being aware can be helpful for using strategies in the classroom. However, as Chris Packham said "If you have met one person with autism, you have met one person with autism". Or in other words, autism exhibits very differently in different individuals.

There are support groups. There is a charity that runs a shop in Beccles called the A Shop and I guess there are strategies that can be helpful and support networks etc.

There are many parts of my job that I like. I just focus on the wrong stuff. My brain just needs a bit of a software update which is why the gentle approach of one of these apps might be enough.

Downloaded Calm. Liking the look of it so far. Even the music puts me in a better place.

Once again, thanks all. Back to work I go.

The only benefit for myself would be understanding why I am 'different' and learning to deal with it. At 55 it might be too late to make any huge difference to my life.

I've found yoga the most calming thing of all. I started using it for stretching in between long runs but have seen huge calming benefits too.

There are hundreds of videos on YouTube for free too.

I know that was then, but it could be again..

Sorry to hear about this… it is probably fairly common and - though I am now in my dream job - is something I have experienced on a low level at times in the past. We have a little whattsapp group of like minded work mates which helps keep work/life stuff in perspective. If you worry at night then playing YouTube rainstorms or ocean wave / similar sound tracks may help to relax and get to sleep…

Good luck.. g

This is a great thread and a positive sign some of the stigma surrounding mental health is finally lifting.
I've lived with anxiety for just over a decade and I find it tiring. These days I'm grateful that I have many more good days than bad. At my worst I had counselling and it really helped me.
I just hate the unpredictabilty of an episode occuring. I had a bad one on Boxing day and all the family were around. It took all my energy to keep it together. I was having a great day and didn't feel stressed at all, then bang, the rollercoaster ride starts.
It sometimes comes on when I'm at a game and I hate it. It completely ruins the experience and I can't wait to get back to the car.
I'm interested to hear about the app.
Again, this is a really positive thread.

Distortion becomes somehow pure in its wildness.
