Why not? Johnson is prime minister and Britain has left the EU. Nothing should shock us anymore.

Is it the Government that decides them, is there a more independent group that does or do the opposition get to decide some as well as the Government? How many former PMs have been knighted? What does it say about whoever has decided this?

I hate knighthoods/damehoods. They're often for people who can run really fast or jump really high or something. Or are stupidly wealthy off the back of a long-running acting career. Or in these cases who knows what? I want to see knighthoods awarded to someone who has jumped in front of a stranger about to be stabbed. That chap who jumped into the Thames and died trying to rescue someone he'd never even met. So posthumously if necessary. A recognition of something worthy.

Totally! The only person that thinks Tony Blair deserves a knighthood is Tony Blair.

Fair enough. So there are some chosen by the Queen and some by the Government then.

The fact this is the choice of the Queen only makes it even more odd. I can only assume there is something we are overlooking as to why she has chosen this. EDIT: At point of making this comment I was unaware who you meant by scaremongers. A disgraceful comment that has rightly earnt you criticism and downvotes. Without the scientific advisors who have been recognised in this list, the Government's mismanagement of this pandemic would have been even more catastrophic than at times it has been anyway. Agree entirely. Politicians, sportsmen like Hamilton who earn millions, actors, people who suck up to the government and earn millions doing it, people politically useful etc etc. Honours should be for people who do extraordinary things like the examples you give.

Many former PMs received peerages. Churchill turned one down for a knighthood.
