What are peoples thoughts on interest rates over the next 2 or 3 years 10:58 - Jan 6 with 2439 views | homer_123 | Inflation going up and costs in general are rising....my thinking is interest rates could rise sharply - maybe to 3% or 4% or more in that time period, if inflation cannot be managed.

What are peoples thoughts on interest rates over the next 2 or 3 years on 12:17 - Jan 6 by J2BLUE | I locked in 7. Really considered 10 to be honest. Dirt cheap and one less thing to worry about. |
we were offered a 10 yearer, me and missus both said yep go for it..... then, and i swear this happened, the mortgage advisor said "hmmmm they sound a good idea, but you two are still pretty young, not all marriages last, and its expensive to get out of it" i said carry on with the 10 year, missus decided on the 5 yearer....... something tells me she wants out soon....

What are peoples thoughts on interest rates over the next 2 or 3 years on 13:36 - Jan 6 by Eireannach_gorm | The company that I have my PRB with, allocated 80% of funds to cash which is actually losing money so I have now moved it to a different company with more beneficial choice of fund ( share funds are doing particularly well at the moment ). On another note Irish inflation went from under 2% in April ( was minus value at the start of 2021 ) to over 5% in December and predicted to go to 7% mid 2022. Moral of the story is not to leave your money idle or it will depreciate. On the mortgage front ( thankfully not a personal concern ), fixing the rate is probably wise. |
Sound advice. My mortgage isn't renewable until summer 2023, with a hefty and prohibitive early repayment fee if I wanted to before then. On the one hand I'm grateful to be on the rate I am for 18 months longer, yet on the other I'm nervous about what the situation will be when that time comes. As well as trying to put myself in a position where I can make sure the absolute loan amount is less at that time, I'm also trying to cost effectively add as much value to my property as I can over the next 18 months in an attempt to offset any rate increases when the time comes, by hopefully pushing for a lower LTV. I've been too cautious before with valuations, a couple of friends of mine have put what I thought were punchy numbers on thiers and the bank valuations have agreed to it and it's put them in a better bracket.

What are peoples thoughts on interest rates over the next 2 or 3 years on 11:12 - Jan 6 by StokieBlue | If interest rates hit 4% in that time period then the number of people defaulting on their mortgages is going to be pretty large. For instance, if you have a 250k mortgage @ 2% then a rise to 5% (which would be likely with interest rates at 4%) would mean an increase in payments of ~400 per month. SB |
to think when i had a mortgage my average rate was 8% after a couple of years of this i went to saudi to work and paid my mortgage of in one year. good job the locals didn't think of me of taking their jobs from them

When I worked for a financial services company many years ago the accepted wisdom was to put a high proportion of the pension fund into 'safe' investments in the years immediately before retirement. Now not wishing to insinuate that you are getting ready to hang up your boots but could that be what your PRB provider company was up to? Avoiding high risk shares in potentially volatile times, there again the correct way of following that strategy would be to invest in government bonds or similar low rate but secure stock - not, as you say, cash that is losing value in real terms every day.

I think this is the new normal; the BoE doesn’t want you to save they want you to invest and spend. Opie you should get proper advice off an IFA though.

Even paying extra on my mortgage is losing value apparently. But what can I do for the next 4 years with a better return than my mortgage rate? Not much I imagine.

Share funds are doing particularly well at the moment. Is that a coincidence? Or is that the boomers throwing everything they can into their retirement accounts before retiring? What happens when they all start taking money out of their pensions? Genuinely asking as i'm not entirely sure. There's generally more of them in the US and UK though than other generations and do most of the young even have enough spare to save for retirement? I try and put money into stocks which are in line with long term trends like renewable energy, plant based diets and the extra medical care needs of an elderly population. Not a recommendation by any means as I may be doing completely the wrong thing.
