Ashes lunchtime sweepstake time. 22:48 - Jan 8 with 1612 viewsMelford

Last night I said 48-4 and wasn't far out. Tonight I'm going for 81-2. I reckon we'll get a draw here.

86-4

All out by tea

I backed Australia at 7/2 early doors and despite laying a bit off at Evens yesterday, I’ve left the majority to ride as I think they’ll bowl us out.

Very suprised to see the draw so short today. The rain has to come for that to happen imo as we cannot bat 90 overs in this format when we absolutely need to.

85 for 4.
All out 153.
Our batting has the backbone of an amoeba in a test match environment.

That's one down.

46 is a heck of an opening partnership by our standards these days mind.

Yours was closest shout yesterday from what I remember 👍

Came to this tonight with thought in mind of 152 all out, which is pretty optimistic, but 1 less than Seablu!

Edit - forgot about the lunchtime deadline! 88 for 6.

With Crawley just going, can see this being over before we get to tea.

Got up for the final session and was suprised to see us looking good for a draw only 4 down but Stokes getting out there means it’s going to be a relentless 27 overs of attack remaining and wouldn’t at all be suprised to see England fall apart

An England collapse here. 2 wickets left in 64 balls with Leach, Broad and Anderson to face them.

First ball I hear on awaking is Bairstow getting out. 60 odd balls to survive 2 wickets.

Boland has a test bowling average of 7.93.

Logic suggests we won’t survive, not with whom we have to come and more importantly the quality of the Aussie attack.

Credit where it is due, they’ve done extremely well to get the draw with so many balls left and so few wickets. Personally, I thought it was over when Broad was striding to the wicket. Good to see that fighting spirit from the English lads. Imagine if the series was still alive and we had an ending like that? Something to build on at the very least.

1)Hope Stokes can play n the next game, even if only as a batsman. He has got his movement and confidence back.
2) Ditto Bairstow
3) Give Leach a proper field and he looks like a proper bowler
4) We'd be better off with Burns opening instead of Hameed.
5) Please don't 'rotate' out Anderson or Broad

We need to treasure Stokes and last thing we want us him out for the Windies Tour, send him home with Butler. We need to get Robinson back in so one of Wood ( who has got Labuschange number), Broad or Anderson will have to drop out.

Can’t disagree with much of that my little town. Who will keep? Pope or Billings. In going forwards, I hope England concentrate on who the best wicketkeeper is and not the other variables. Some of the chances Buttler has dropped I can’t help but feel a specialist like Foakes would’ve snared them. Think Broad said it right after the game, concentrate on selection for the next game, avoid being too clever thinking about selections for 4 or 5 games ahead…..or something like that. When Crawley was playing his shots today, he reminded me of a young Micheal Vaughan at the crease, but I agree start Burns ahead of Hameed he looks a walking wicket at the moment.

Bloody tense that, at last something to get excited about, even if only crumbs of comfort! In hindsight, glad that they carried on for it to be a 'proper' draw, but I did wonder why umpires didn't at least offer Broad & Leach/Anderson the light - or maybe they did? & the batsmen turned that down?

Well done in particular to Crawley, Stokes, Bairstow, Leach, Broad and Anderson 👍

I'd thought the Aussies would declare at around 320, couldn't understand why they carried on for so much longer.

The Aussie commentators were politely rude about Root's field placements.

Edit: PS - and well done Melford, against all the odds!

Setting a target so high was very surprising, England haven't posted a total over 300 this series and not really done it that often all of last year, that did eat into the game which I'm sure the England camp were pleased about.

David Gower was also pretty scathing about Root's field placements., it wasn't just the Aussies.

but on a batting friendly wicket remember, and Ive no doubt the Indian game last year was on their mind, India were given a target of 407, having been bowled out for 248 1st innings, but were at one stage looking like chasing it down, in the end it finished as a draw, so 388 arguably was the right call for an England side, far enough out its not chaseable at all even if someone suddenly finds they do know which end of the bat to hit the ball with, if Crawley gets his hundred, suddenly its a very different game. I think 3 whole sessions plus a go before cop yesterday was fine call, but youd need to see what the stats say about totals chased there as it will absolutely be based on stats and not the captains gut feel anymore.

of course every man and his dog always claims post match they should have declared sooner, yet they had 20 overs with their best bowling attack ,against Englands tailenders, who if you remember at the MCG took 6 wickets in just 10 overs.

I didn't say it post match, I said it in real time, when the Aussies reached 310 yet still carried on.

It's still 3-0. Recent Sydney experience says it's not too difficult in the 4th innings. Crawley looked very good (using his height and leaving very well outside off stump) and was scoring at a good rate.

There's been three 5-0s in the history of the Ashes, I'm not sure Australia were as worried about this as much as England. If the target was lower and Crawley had carried on then it was possible. No need to give them a sniff.

I agree with you. India’s batting line up blows ours out of the water even if it was missing some of their more established batsmen when they were in Oz last year. 320-330 would’ve been plenty on that wicket especially with how inept our batting has been for the last 18 months to two years, we rarely post a 300 score even in the first innings. The fact the Aussies had already won the series, why not set set a competitive run chase? I found it a little strange especially with the quality of their bowling attack, 388 was excessive.

apologies then, but even during the game, in cricket declarations are one of those things where the captain is only ever given the credit for calling it properly if they win, and everyone with an opinion states he got it totally wrong when he doesnt.

and its just not always that clear cut, as I said you need to go and look at 4th innings chase totals at that ground in recent history as I think theyve turned the pitch 90 degrees in the last 15 years, to get a feel for why they chose that kind of target for England.

Id have backed their bowlers to get through Englands weak batting tail line up with 20 overs left, Im sure they did too, that they didnt doesnt mean they needed to have declared any sooner than they did and have more time bowling, it means they didnt bowl enough wicket taking deliveries, and England actually didnt capitulate, but people always fixate on the declaration decision.
