Tell the manager to pick a youth side in the pizza cup then fella rather than first team if you're that worried.

Wigan Chairman going all Klopp on 14:41 - Jan 9 with 1333 views | TheBoyBlue | I do wonder how these players would get on working in a normal 9-5, five day week, let alone in the NHS (especially currently!). For a start, most clubs play different teams in the cup competitions, so very few will be playing every three days for a hundred days, but even if they did, is it really too much to expect fit young players to play an hour and a half every few days?

Think that's a little unfair, given that the physical exertion and strain upon the body from doing a normal job is in no way comparable to that which high-level footballers put themselves through, when you include training and fitness regimes. Even on the mental side, most don't have tens of thousands of people shouting angrily every time they make an error. Nor are many employees facing such high chances of being sidelined, demoted (i.e. to a lower division club) or their earning potential significantly reduced.

Still find it hard to believe that they can't manage a game every three days though.

It's also about recovery time. Even with ice baths and the like, it still takes quite a while to get over the concentrated exertion of an hour and a half of football at that level. Then they're straight back into training and preparing for the next game. No weekends off during the season. No chance of a few days away with friends or family.

I do think a game every two days as some had over Christmas was too much. Also the squeezing in of ever more international fixtures gives the top players less time off. And that tin pot pizza trophy is an absolute joke to throw in, especially with the added fixture congestion since COVID. And of course it will be tougher for those players who have had COVID, as it is for most who have had COVID. But players ought to be able to play games every three days, especially as it rarely happens constantly. Big squads, the diets, the fitness training, rotation. And for most players below the top level, it is 9/10 months a year, for twenty years. [Post edited 9 Jan 2022 16:18]

Players can play games every 3 days. It’s just not a good idea to keep doing it as they’ll break down and end up with long term injuries. Not everyone has a squad the size of ours to have the luxury to rotate.

Another aspect, which is why you hear the managers grumbling, is that they have to squeeze every ounce of performance out of their players (or it's their own job on the line). Necessarily, they will rely on the same core selection of key men for virtually every game. It can be a disaster if one or more are out of the squad. Thus rotation is often of limited benefit. I agree about there being too many fixtures - this ridiculous third European competition, the "Club World Cup", overseas friendly tours, excessive national team qualifiers or friendlies and so on. I don't have too much against the EFL Trophy - as something for lower-division clubs to play for and hope to win - except that it shouldn't have Prem U21 teams in it.
